Overview
Senior Attorney – Corporate. Under general supervision, performs a broad variety of legal duties in support of the Authority’s General Counsel. Represents the Authority in corporate matters, with emphasis on either commercial litigation or transactions, including providing client departments with advice on major procurements, bond issues, grants, intergovernmental agreements, and other commercial transactions. Salary
$115,000 – $130,000 Responsibilities
Plans, directs, and participates in legal matters as they relate to general corporate issues and other matters on behalf of the Authority. Commercial Litigation: assists chief attorneys with cases, appearances before courts and administrative agencies, trials, hearings and arbitrations; examines witnesses, argues motions, and drafts motions, briefs, and documents; obtains and defends depositions and conducts other discovery; prepares witnesses for depositions, hearings, and trials; researches and drafts pleadings, motions, and briefs; drafts and negotiates settlement agreements. Transactions: provides advice on transaction structures; assists departments with contract disputes and bid protests; reviews, negotiates and drafts contracts and other agreements, including intergovernmental agreements, settlement agreements, administrative regulations, real estate agreements (e.g., leases, licenses, sale agreements) ordinances and requests for proposals. Provides advice and counsel on a wide variety of general corporate matters typical to a large municipal corporation, including financial matters, intellectual property, and Federal and State grant requirements. Manages work of support staff, junior attorneys, or legal interns assigned to projects; verifies work for accuracy and compliance with legal standards and practices. Conducts research to advise client departments and may provide direct counsel; attends professional group meetings and stays current with new legal developments, trends, and innovations. Education/Experience
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school; licensed to practice in the State of Illinois; three (3) years of experience as a practicing attorney, including one (1) year specializing in corporate law, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required to maintain continuing legal education credits. Experience with public sector procurement laws preferred. Physical Requirements
Requires remaining stationary for extended periods and frequent use of computer and office equipment. Service Area Requirement: Exempt (Non-Union) employees must live within the CTA Statutory Service Area either at time of employment or within 6 months of starting employment at CTA. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Detailed knowledge of applicable federal and state laws; negotiation strategies; legal research methods; judicial procedure; and rules of evidence. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite; strong verbal and written communication skills; strong analytical and managerial abilities; ability to provide timely legal advice; ability to work with integrity and initiative. Ability to independently handle matters; if emphasis is litigation, ability to second chair almost every litigation matter involving the Authority. Working Conditions
General office environment; occasional site visits to non-office locations (e.g., court or CTA facilities). Equipment and Tools
