The Opportunity Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Residential Dining, this position leads operations at Northside Café and Espresso, ensuring high quality food and service to guests. The unit has annual gross sales of $2.5 million, serves 1,500–1,800 residential students and the campus community, and provides over 8,500 meals and snacks weekly.
This position supervises three Associate Managers (Executive Chef, Sous Chef, and Service Manager), 13 civil service staff, and 100–140 student employees. It oversees front-of-house and back-of-house operations, including customer service, cashiering, food production, inventory management, and sanitation. It leads menu planning aligned with Dining Services’ culinary vision, manages quality control, and ensures compliance with health and safety standards.
Additional responsibilities include budget administration, policy development, labor management, and staff training. The Food Service Manager supports student success through nutritious meals and responsive service while maintaining financial performance and employee satisfaction.
Hiring Incentive : To support WSU’s ability to attract talent, this recruitment has been approved for a hiring incentive payment of up to $4,000.00. More information is available on the HRS website.
Additional Information This is a full time (100% FTE), permanent position. This position is overtime eligible.
Monthly Salary:
$4,942.10 - $7,567.00 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant administration, institutional management, business administration or closely related field and four (4) years of supervisory/management experience including planning and budgeting. Additional qualifying food service work experience and/or vocational training in quantity food preparation may be substituted, year-for-year, for college education.
Strong leadership skills, organizational abilities, and supervisory experience.
Experience supervising in multi-unit operations with depth and breadth in scope and concept, or equivalent education/experience.
Flexible schedule including nights and weekends.
Experience managing or supervising and training a large, diverse staff.
Experience with labor cost controls.
Strong communication skills.
Strong computer knowledge.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Washington State Food Handler’s Permit within 14 days of employment.
Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in University dining operations, including retail and board operations.
Experience with scheduling software to manage a 150+ employee work schedule.
Experience with Point-of-Sale systems to track sales data.
Experience with POS and Sales Reporting tools.
Team players with excellent customer service skills who remain calm under pressure.
Experience managing bargaining unit employees.
