Overview
Pilot of Fire Boats - Fire Department (H120) role at City and County of San Francisco. This is a full-time civil service position with 24-hour watches and permanent status. Responsibilities
Operate the vessel’s pilot house and bridge equipment while responding to emergencies or service operations, and in preparation to get underway. Take the helm, issue engine orders, and operate propulsion controls, radar, compass, radio, and other navigation equipment. Navigate the fire boat in all weather conditions and at all hours in response to calls requiring fire boat support and services. Participate in fire suppression duties as necessary and practicable. Position the fire boat to maximize crew effectiveness in firefighting and life/property protection. Implement damage control measures to protect personnel and equipment in cases of casualty or emergency. Inspect the vessel and equipment and arrange for required maintenance of deck and navigation equipment. Participate in cleaning, scaling and painting duties, and perform minor repairs and alterations to topside areas, holds, and deck equipment. Maintain up-to-date log books and records in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Ensure all personnel aboard adhere to safety standards. Participate in inspections of buildings and structures in the San Francisco Bay area for fire suppression planning purposes. Qualifications
This selection process is open to individuals meeting all of the minimum qualifications listed below at the time of application filing. Additional qualifications may apply to a particular position as stated in the exam/job announcement. Education
A high school diploma or equivalency certificate (e.g., G.E.D., California High School Proficiency Certificate). Experience
10 years verifiable experience as master aboard commercial vessels. One year of experience (2080 hours) within the last two years as master aboard commercial vessels. License and Certification
Current United States Coast Guard license of 500 gross tons in one of the following categories: “Master’s license valid for ocean, coastwise, or inland”; “Master Freight and Tow”; or “Master (Operator), Un-inspected Towing Vessels”. Radar endorsement included with the license. Pass federally mandated random drug screening. Desirable Qualifications
Recent experience maintaining and operating vessels on the San Francisco Bay and its tributaries. Recent experience operating tugboats and/or fireboats. Application and Selection

The selection process may include a performance exercise. Qualified applicants will be notified of the date, time, and location approximately 30 days in advance. The performance exercise will assess knowledge areas and abilities related to navigation rules, safety procedures, piloting and navigation of fire boats, and related duties. Includes demonstrations of emergency maneuvering and effective communication. Verification
