Overview
Mergers & Acquisitions Tax Managing Director, State and Local Tax BDO USA is seeking a Mergers & Acquisitions Tax Managing Director, State and Local Tax to provide written tax advice to clients, evaluate and identify action plans to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, recognize potential tax risks, and identify changes in tax policy and regulations. This role includes marketing, networking and business development within the candidate’s area of expertise and maintaining key client relationships. It is a leadership role within the office’s/region’s Tax Services leadership team, serving as a source for guidance on complex tax questions and issues.
Job Description The Tax Managing Director, State and Local Taxation is responsible for providing written tax advice to clients, evaluating alternate courses of action to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, recognizing potential tax risks and identifying potential changes in tax policy and regulations. The role includes marketing, networking and business development within their area of experience and specialization and maintaining key client relationships.
Job Duties
Research
Identifies when research is necessary and conducts appropriate investigations
Analyzes researched facts and sources
Prepares studies of tax implications and outlines alternative courses of action for clients
Partners with other Core Tax and Specialized Tax Services professionals to resolve complex matters
Tax Compliance
Ensures clients comply with applicable authorities while identifying options to minimize tax and reporting burdens
Manages engagements to meet engagement metrics
Collaborates with Business Development and other strategic parties to drive sales tax compliance offerings
Tax Consulting
Handles inquiries from federal and state agencies regarding tax issues
Drafts responses to examiner questions and challenges
Monitors implementations of work plans for tax consulting projects
Provides solutions by combining tax knowledge with business/industry understanding
Tax Controversy
Represents clients before tax authorities on contested issues
Responds to questions from federal or state agencies
Tax Specialization
Acts as industry expert in SALT
Identifies cross-selling opportunities with other tax specializations
Manages SALT services for assigned clients
Develops tools and improvements to enhance SALT practice efficiency
Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS 109
Prepares tax accrual workpapers
ASC 740-10
Applies industry standards and firm policies related to FAS 109 and FIN 48
Recognizes, measures and documents financial benefits to clients
Strategy Development
Develops ideas to advance client, firm or personnel positions by reducing taxes or expenses or offering non-tax benefits
Participates in relevant industry groups
Leads marketing campaigns and external SALT initiatives
Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises the day-to-day workload of STS SALT Senior Managers, Managers and Staff on assigned engagements and reviews work product
Ensures staff are trained on relevant tax software
Evaluates performance and assists in developing goals for professional growth
Delivers periodic performance feedback and completes evaluations
Acts as Career Advisor to STS SALT personnel as appropriate
Education, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required
Master’s degree in Accounting, Taxation or related field preferred
Juris Doctorate preferred
Experience
Ten (10) or more years of SALT experience required
Prior experience supervising tax professionals on engagements required
Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions preferred
Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations and partnerships preferred
Licenses/Certifications
CPA or other relevant certification preferred
Software
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel and Word) preferred
Exposure to standard tax applications and research tools preferred
Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong analytical and research abilities
Strong organizational skills with attention to deadlines
Ability to multi-task and work independently or in a team
Ability to manage a team of tax professionals and delegate work as needed
Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and client personnel
Executive presence and ability to be primary contact on engagements
Ability to interact with professionals at all levels
Advanced knowledge of tax standards for effective service delivery
Salary ranges vary by geography. National: $157,500 - $420,000 | Maryland: $157,500 - $420,000 | NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $157,500 - $420,000 | Washington DC: $157,500 - $420,000
