Description The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine is a diverse, high-performing department focused on patient care, research, education, and academia. Orthopaedic Surgery provides treatment for disorders of the musculoskeletal system, offering comprehensive and innovative services across subspecialties including foot and ankle, hand and microvascular surgery, joint reconstruction, spine, sports medicine, orthopaedic oncology, and trauma. The department supports an ACGME-accredited residency program and fellowship programs in hand and microvascular surgery, joint reconstruction, spine, and trauma.

Responsibilities Under the direction of the supervising physician, the Physician Assistant provides direct care of Orthopaedic Surgery patients in inpatient and emergent settings. The PA collaborates with medical staff to perform comprehensive histories and physical exams, interpret lab and diagnostic data, and develop differential and working diagnoses. Responsibilities include hospital rounds, discharge planning, consultative evaluations, order entry (medications, orthoses, injections, devices), minor procedures within scope, patient education, triage, documentation, and coordination of a multidisciplinary care plan to address physical, psychological, and social needs. The PA works with physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals to manage patient care and ensure appropriate prioritization of traumatic injuries. The role may involve research, data management, quality assurance, and involvement in program activities as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a graduate from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program.

Current State of California PA license.

Current PA certification from NCCPA.

BL S and ACLS certifications at time of hire with a commitment to obtain ART within six months.

Minimum of two (2) years of recent PA experience in PACU, ICU, or other high-acuity inpatient medical management.

Knowledge and experience with inpatient medical management.

Strong foundation in anatomy, physiology, general medicine, emergency and critical care, pharmacology, and related medical knowledge.

Experience in initial history and physical examination and developing management plans.

Experience with operating room standards and procedures.

Ability to maintain detailed medical information; ability to instruct staff and students; knowledge of treatment modalities for orthopaedic care.

Ability to perform various medical procedures, including diagnostic studies and therapeutic modalities for orthopaedic conditions.

Ability to write clear medical reports and progress notes; effective written and verbal communication with patients and health care staff.

Working knowledge of medical terminology with focus on Orthopaedic Surgery.

Ability to write orders and assess patient status and progress; effective communication with the physician in charge.

Knowledge of coding patient visits and compliance with governmental and UC guidelines.

Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.

Commitment to professional ethics, and ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications

Orthopaedic surgery experience.

Inpatient care experience within orthopaedic surgery.

Special Conditions

This position is scheduled for four 10-hour shifts per week.

Overtime, weekend, and/or evening schedule may be required intermittently.

Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years.

Pay Transparency Annual Full Pay Range: $160,922 - $211,974 (will be prorated if appointment percentage

Hourly Equivalent: $77.07 - $101.52

The Hiring Pay Scale is the budgeted salary/hourly range UC San Diego Health reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader due to internal equity, budget, and agreements.
