Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
Qualifications To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Doctor of medicine or equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine
Degree obtained from a VA-approved school for the year completed
Full, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification
Approved residencies: ACGME/APT (1), AOA (2), or other non-U.S. residencies with at least five years of U.S. practice considered adequate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee
Residents in ACGME/AOA programs who meet basic requirements may be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians, not training licenses, and may be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis
PRPs are not independent practitioners and are not privileged; they work under a scope of practice allowing supervised duties
Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
Proficiency in spoken and written English
Preferred Experience: Women’s Health – Family Medicine (reference: https://www.va.gov/ohrm/QualificationStandards/)
Physical Requirements: Moderately lifting (15‑44 lbs), light carrying (under 15 lbs), pulling (up to 2 hours), pushing (up to 2 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending, vision and hearing requirements, clear speech
Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Duties VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package, including:

Responsibilities: The Physician will be part of a multidisciplinary team to provide primary care and gender‑specific care of female veterans of all ages at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center and associated CBOCs. The team includes pharmacy, gynecology, social work, mental health, and nutrition. Duties include:
Preventive health care and primary care evaluation and management of chronic and acute medical conditions
Gender‑specific care: gynecological care, birth‑control counseling, preconception care, breast and cervical cancer screenings, HPV vaccinations, pelvic exams, treatment of sexually transmitted infections, pelvic/abdominal pain, menstrual concerns, vaginal symptoms, urinary incontinence, initial infertility evaluation, menopause evaluation and hormone replacement
Collaborating with two gynecologists on site, a women's veterans practice manager, maternity coordinator, breast care coordinator, and breast surgeon
Providing care via multiple modalities: face‑to‑face, virtual, secure messaging, and telephone, including coordination of care
Delivering appropriate preventative care focusing on quality measures to promote veteran quality of care
Participating in team and facility quality improvement and population‑based interventions
Ordering diagnostic and screening testing and following up on results
Participating in medical student and resident supervision in clinic with opportunities for trainee quality improvement projects and didactic teaching
Opportunity for faculty appointment at affiliated medical schools
Providing a full range of primary care clinical services, including assessment and use of appropriate techniques to deliver quality specialty care
Effective participation in team meetings and treatment planning conferences, collaborating to enhance coordination of comprehensive patient care
Ensuring practice consistency with Joint Commission, CARF, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, VISN standards, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, mandatory continuing education, and HIPAA policies
Specific tasks listed in each provider’s Credentialing and Privileging package
