Mapbox is looking to hire motivated, curious, and innovative Software Development Engineers (SDEs) for our Maps API, Traffic, and MapGPT product teams. These teams hire through a centralized model, offering candidates the opportunity to choose which team to join. Traffic – We develop and maintain web services powering Mapbox’s navigation initiatives in consumer, automotive, and logistics. Work spans distributed systems on AWS, geospatial localization, traffic telemetry, and mapping. MapGPT – We are revolutionizing mobile and in-car experiences with a location‑intelligence powered voice assistant. Our work spans NLP, speech recognition, and ML-based recommendations for voice-driven experiences. Maps API – We build and maintain applications and infrastructure to create and distribute Mapbox Maps, including high-traffic read APIs and ETL pipelines for visualizing location data. What Youll Do
As a Software Development Engineer II, API at Mapbox, you will help develop software for complex mapping and navigation software for cars, web, and mobile devices. In This Role, You Can Expect To
Collaborate with your team to identify and scope well-defined tasks. Execute on the scope and be accountable for delivering on time with quality. Design systems and make decisions that keep pace with Mapbox’s growing customer base. Promote operational excellence by testing and monitoring systems, writing documentation, and being on-call to support service health. Reduce technical debt, share knowledge, and invest in teammates’ health and happiness while optimizing performance and feature velocity. Uphold a culture of collaboration, transparency, creativity, inclusion, and data-driven decisions. What We Believe Are Important Traits For This Role
5+ years of experience building scalable high-volume, low-latency backend services Proficiency in Python, NodeJS, TypeScript (backend), AWS (CDK, ECS, Fargate, Step Functions, Lambda, S3, etc.) Familiarity with version control tools such as GitHub Ability to engage, learn and contribute quickly to initiatives Ability to perform independently all development tasks based on designs and specs Self-starter who is communication and outcomes-oriented Empirical analytical approach with strong hypotheses, spikes, and clear findings Desire to share expertise through documentation, mentorship, pairing, and written and verbal communication Desire to work with diverse individuals High-quality mindset – write unit tests, remediate defects, and follow through to production Nice to Have Traits for This Role
Experience with location technologies (navigation, mapping, GIS) Experience with Amazon RDS Experience with SQL and/or C++ Experience with security standards and related knowledge What We Value
