Medical Lab Scientist, Advanced in the Stem Cell Lab at Duke University Hospital . Monday - Friday, Second Shift: either 11:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. or 12:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. One on-call Saturday per month. This position is eligible for the second-shift differential and a $7,500 commitment bonus. General Description

Perform a variety of routine and complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests and procedures to obtain data for use in the treatment of disease. Job duties include, but are not limited to, quality control, clerical tasks (EMMES data entry, patient lab file reviews, completion of CIMBTR forms, etc). ABO Typing, viability testing, sterility testing, thawing of cellular products (37°C, Dextran Albumin Thaws), and cryopreservation of autologous and allogeneic cellular products to include, but not limited to: HPC, Cord Blood, HPC, Apheresis, HPC, Marrow, MNC, Apheresis, etc. Receipt and/or distribution of incoming or outgoing NMDP cellular products using sterile techniques.

Duties Performed: (Technical Duties)

QC on Sysmex Hematology Analyzer 37°C thawing of cellular products (in STCL and on inpatient units) Viability testing using trypan blue (or automated method) ABO/Rh confirmatory testing of cellular products Sterility testing of cellular products pre- and/or post-processing Dextran Albumin thawing of cellular products in the STCL Cryopreservation of cellular products (HPC, Apheresis, HPC, Marrow, HPC, Cord Blood, MNC, Apheresis, etc) CD34+ / CD56+ selection/depletion procedures Processing outgoing NMDP (Be the Match) products including CIBMTR data entry Processing incoming NMDP (Be the Match) products for infusion Processing of fresh, allogeneic products for cryopreservation, infusion Processing of fresh, autologous products for cryopreservation, infusion Disposal and documentation of cellular products approved for discard Working with liquid nitrogen freezers All other job-related duties that are deemed necessary in the laboratory.

STCL EMMES database data entry requirements EPIC (clinical medical record used on-site) File Reviews required for laboratory batch records Completion of quality control worksheets daily, weekly, monthly, etc Filing of laboratory results in designated/secured file cabinets Processing and testing of outgoing NMDP products including completion of CIBMTR data forms to meet deadlines Processing and testing of incoming NMDP products for infusion Processing and testing of allogeneic fresh products for infusion

Required Qualifications

Education : Bachelors of Science/Bachelor of Arts in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology. Generalist certification required for General labs. Generalist/Specialty certification required for specialty labs. Experience : Two years experience as a certified MLS. Blood Bank experience or work in a Cellular Therapy Lab strongly preferred. Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification : Generalist/Specialty Certification by a nationally recognized board/agency (required). Certification will vary depending on laboratory. Master in Science in lieu of certification for Biochemical Genetics Laboratory. ASCP or NCA strongly preferred.
