Highmark Health is seeking a groundbreaking Lead Data Scientist, Research & Development, specializing in Graph Intelligence, who will define the future of how we harness relational insights in healthcare. This is a premier R&D position to lead in inventing and proving out graph-native analytical solutions that leverage network science, knowledge graphs, and Graph Machine Learning to solve critical problems across the healthcare continuum. Responsibilities
Lead cutting-edge research projects in graph theory, knowledge graphs, and graph neural networks as part of strategic initiatives. Build and enrich large-scale knowledge graphs and develop graph embeddings, perform link prediction, community detection, and anomaly detection on healthcare data. Design rigorous experiments, develop proof-of-concept models, and evaluate performance and interpretability of graph algorithms for real-world use. Collaborate with business teams to identify opportunities, translate results into actionable insights, and support frontline implementation. Architect and deliver analytical solutions to multiple complex business problems and document objectives, assumptions, and processes. Stay informed on graph AI landscape, evaluate new platforms and tools, and foster collaborations with academia and the graph community. Publish research findings and contribute to the discussion on graph intelligence in healthcare. Education
Required
Master's degree in Analytics, Mathematics, Physics, Computer and Information Science, Engineering Technology, or related field OR Bachelor's Degree + 3 years of relevant work experience in lieu of a Master’s degree Preferred
Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Analytics, Mathematics, Physics, Computer and Information Science, Engineering Technology, or related field Experience
Required
5 years of Data Science experience 3 years Data Science experience if PhD education Preferred
Deep Expertise in Graph Theory & Network Science: graph algorithms, knowledge graphs, and network analysis Advanced Graph Machine Learning (GML): design and optimize GNN architectures for node classification, link prediction, anomaly detection Knowledge Graph Engineering: schema design, data ingestion, entity resolution, and graph querying Graph Database & Platform Experience: Neo4j, Google Spanner Graph, etc., and distributed graph processing GML Libraries & Frameworks: PyTorch Geometric, DGL, Spektral, StellarGraph Cloud Platform & MLOps: deploying ML models in cloud environments with MLOps practices Research & Publication Acumen: peer-reviewed publications or demonstrated impact from concept to prototype Healthcare Data Familiarity: claims, clinical, EMR data and related ontologies (SNOMED CT, ICD) a plus Experimental Design & Rigour: robust experiments and clear interpretation of results Licenses or Certifications
