Small Commercial Underwriter

in property casualty insurance, you’ll develop, grow and maintain diversified books of business while working closely with agents and brokers to assess risks, determine premiums, set conditions and negotiate deals that maximize profitability and meet business goals.

Assess risks, determine premiums, set conditions and negotiate deals to maximize profitability and meet business goals.

Collaborate with internal teams to ensure underwriting guidelines are followed and to support business growth.

What you’ll be doing as part of the team

Strategic Account Manager: write new accounts with premiums of $100,000 and below, grow agent/broker relationships, and pursue renewals.

Problem solver: analyze data to determine risk selection, premiums, policies and conditions, and identify opportunities for growth, profit and diversification.

Clear communicator: maintain and nurture relationships with agents and brokers, present proposals, negotiate deals and obtain approvals.

Collaborative teammate: mentor other underwriters, share best practices, and pursue continuous improvement.

Conscientious professional: document account reviews, state-compliant sign-offs and referrals, and follow underwriting guidelines.

Qualifications Experience

3-5+ years of relevant experience

Experience with multi-line insurance products

Skills

Analytical, problem-solving capabilities

Strong territory management skills

Excellent communication skills

Aptitude for building rewarding relationships with agents, brokers, peer underwriters, underwriting assistants, and junior underwriters

Knowledge

Command of insurance finance and actuarial concepts

Thorough knowledge of commercial insurance products, underwriting, risk selection, pricing and marketplaces, plus regulatory issues in relevant territories

Understanding of contract language, including regulatory and policy differences among applicable states

Familiarity with continuous improvement processes and tools

Education

A bachelor’s degree in a related field

Chartered Property Casual Underwriter or other professional insurance designation preferred
