Maintenance Mechanic Three
is an experienced mechanic position with applicable training and advanced skills related to nutritional supplement manufacturing. The role demonstrates leadership and can coordinate projects involving personnel, material and training. This position maintains production quality and safety by ensuring proper operation of machinery and mechanical equipment. The individual will ensure operation by completing preventive maintenance requirements and following manufacturer’s instructions, operation manuals, engineering specifications, electrical schematics, blueprints, diagrams and sketches. The mechanic will monitor and maintain production equipment, troubleshoot and repair high-speed encapsulation, tableting, filling and packaging equipment in a timely, safe and efficient manner to the level of their training. Maintain equipment maintenance logs and documentation in accordance with SOP and cGMP guidelines; complete necessary Corrective and Preventive Work Orders. Work closely with Maintenance and Operations personnel to attain production goals and objectives. Responsibilities include responding to maintenance requests for manufacturing and packaging equipment, troubleshooting problems, and implementing solutions or improvements to restore line operations. Duties also include installing, maintaining, repairing and rebuilding encapsulation machines, tablet presses and packaging equipment; testing for proper operation and personnel safety. Directly involved with troubleshooting mechanical problems related to production/packaging equipment. • Develop and provide technical training on production/packaging equipment to ensure production personnel are familiar with new equipment/control systems. • Coordinate installation/start-up activities and ensure performance criteria of new equipment and machine parts are met. Recommend concerning the need for equipment repair and the severity of such needs. Integrate changes in technology and upgrade existing equipment and processes. Interpret and apply information from schematics and manuals to existing problems. • Contribute to IQ/OQ & PQ protocol documents to outline appropriate tests to verify proper installation, operations and performance of packaging equipment/systems. Assist in developing maintenance programs and inventory systems. Maintain shop cleanliness and orderliness. • Troubleshoot problems and recommend solutions or improvements to restore line operations. Install, maintain, repair and rebuild encapsulation machines, tablet presses and packaging equipment. Perform preventative maintenance and inspect for proper operation and safety. Provide clear legible documentation identifying problems and resolutions. • Coordinate troubleshooting activities on PLC/PC control systems with OEM service departments. Coordinate equipment alterations and packaging material changes for nutraceutical products (change part fabrication, procurement, testing and support documentation to assure setup and performance). • Attend and conduct Factory Acceptance Tests (F.A.T.) of new production equipment at vendors’ factory. Provide clear legible documentation identifying problems and resolutions. Coordinate troubleshooting activities on PLC/PC control systems with OEM service depts. Coordinate alterations and packaging material changes for nutraceutical products; manage change documentation to assure setup and performance. Perform other duties as required to meet company objectives. Qualifications • High school, GED or technical school diploma. • 8+ years of related experience in food, nutritional supplement or pharmaceutical manufacturing. • Applicable training and/or trade apprenticeship. • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to obtain cooperation and cohesiveness on project/work activities. • Advanced understanding of PLCs and electrical control devices and instrumentation. • Advanced working knowledge of machine shop equipment, hand/power tools, electronic measuring equipment. • Good communication skills and attention to detail in paperwork. Familiar with cGMPs and SOPs in a regulated environment. • Technical competence in Solid Dosage Manufacturing; strong mechanical background with ability to assess problems and perform repairs without assistance; ability to work with all levels of management. • Strong problem solving skills and ability to work independently. Proficiency in Windows-based systems and software (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint). • Effective interpersonal and communication skills to coordinate with NAI staff. Team-building abilities to keep client relationships informed. Knowledge of Machine Shop equipment, hand/power tools, basic electronic measuring equipment and blue print/schematic reading (plus). Supervisory Responsibilities The Mechanic/Production Operations has no direct reports but will provide training and work direction to contractors (OEM Service Technicians) and other mechanics as required, and review completed work for quality and SOP compliance. Physical Demands Valid Driver’s license and acceptable driving history Must pass drug screen and criminal record check Standing, sitting, and walking up to 8 hours Lifting up to 65 lbs This position may require extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, stooping and crouching; climbing and lifting/moving equipment or materials up to 50 pounds; work at heights. Decision Making This role requires a strong blend of technical, interpersonal and consulting skills to make recommendations concerning the need for equipment repair and the severity of such needs; conduct cost analysis on repairs versus replacement. Recommendations are made to Production Management for review and approval to proceed. The Mechanic/Production Operations will assist in the development of the Annual Operating Expense budget. Help locate cost-effective sources of spare/ replacement parts and obtain technical support from OEMs to resolve issues without travel costs. Mechanic will work for long periods in production areas with PPE and safety devices as required. Maintenance and shop activities may expose the worker to welding, grinding, noise, fumes, sharps and other hazards. Work environment can include a computer workstation and climate-controlled office.
