Senior Director Quality & Patient Safety
MedStar Health is currently seeking a Senior Director of Quality & Patient Safety at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center. This role champions a culture of safety, develops and implements strategic improvement plans, oversees key performance metrics, and advocates for the highest standards of patient care. You will collaborate across the organization while leading and managing a high-performing team dedicated to advancing quality and safety initiatives. Primary Duties
Leads hospital efforts to achieve top percentile performance in pay-for-performance and reputational quality programs, including Maryland HSCRC quality-based reimbursement (QBR), Readmissions Reduction Program, and Maryland Hospital Acquired Conditions. Also leads reputation measures such as Leapfrog, US News and World Reports, and Hospital Compare STAR ratings. Supervises departments or functions: clinical quality, patient safety, patient relations, risk management. Provides education and orientation to hospital/medical staff regarding quality and safety performance. Implements and monitors quality performance measurement and performance improvement programs. Provides oversight and subject matter expertise in clinical quality measures (HAI, PSIs, mortality, readmissions), focusing on system quality KPIs. Mentors and evaluates staff; directs departmental operations. Maintains a comprehensive outcome management database, ensuring data accuracy and updating the program as needed. Stays current with methodologies and best practices in performance measurement and organizational development. Analyzes and interprets reports on hospital performance related to quality and safety; provides advisement and leadership recommendations to senior leadership. Collaborates on health equity initiatives to identify and reduce disparities in Quality Key Performance Indicators. Functions as hospital risk manager in collaboration with system risk management leadership, identifying risk and controlling through incident pattern analysis and litigation considerations; communicates needs and revised objectives to management to maintain the Risk Management Program. Oversees patient safety events with significant risk or harm, including SUOs and SSEs, and conducts event reviews per MedStar Health processes; ensures peer reviews and implements mitigations for effectiveness and sustainability. Participates in risk management, safety and quality committees and quality councils, contributing to their work and execution. Collaborates with hospital leadership to execute risk reduction for priority safety initiatives. Qualifications
Master’s degree in Administration or a healthcare-related field. Knowledge of continuous quality improvement, processes and methodologies, Joint Commission Standards, and CMS Conditions of Participation. 3-4 years in accreditation/regulatory affairs/performance improvement/patient safety in healthcare required. 5-7 years of managerial experience required. Knowledge of risk/safety event reporting software preferred. This position has a hiring range of $131,497 - $256,630. Seniority level
