Advanced Practice Professional (Physician Assistant) Division of Hospital Medicine Job Summary

The Division of Hospital Medicine program is seeking to hire 1 physician assistant (PA) and/or nurse practitioner (NP) to join our hospitalist program and practice inpatient medicine across multiple service lines, primarily for Medical Short Stay Unit.

The Division cares for complex internal medicine patients with needs ranging from observation/short stay and planned procedures, to general care, moderate and intensive care including patients positive for (or under investigation for) COVID-19. APPs work in collaboration with hospitalist attending physicians and resident trainees to assist with triaging patients, completing history and physicals and other daily documentation, evaluating and managing patients who are admitted or need admission, and formulating diagnostic and treatment plans. The role includes admitting, triage and cross-coverage responsibilities along with procedural and other specialty duties as described below.

The Hospital Medicine APP role is based on a collaborative model of care teams made up of physician and advanced practice providers on services including Medical Short Stay Unit, Medicine Faculty Hospitalists, Medicine Procedure Service, Medicine Hematology co-managed service, and internal medicine resident ward services. APPs are expected to engage in clinical activities and responsibilities, as well as education and continuous quality improvement activities.

Full Time Salary range: $130,630 - $200,734 / year

Responsibilities

Assess and triage patients referred for admission from external sources (e.g., clinics), the emergency department or other internal sources (e.g., other clinical services) for appropriateness and destination of care delivery.

Assess new patients for relevant health and medical history, perform a physical examination and complete documentation and procedures related to admission.

Manage the care of admitted patients (MSSU, MFH, or ED Boarding Team), including:

Order diagnostic studies, medications, and treatments for acute conditions and manage co-existing conditions.

Review, interpret, and manage diagnostic data.

Write prescriptions for medications under delegated prescriptive authority from the attending physician(s).

Competently perform invasive and non-invasive procedures (e.g., lumbar puncture, paracentesis, thoracentesis, joint aspirations) as appropriate.

Coordinate patient transfers between sites of care within the University and across external care sites.

Coordinate and lead patient and family communication, provide education, discuss goals of care, and delineate code status as needed.

Call consultants and carry out work up and plans of care as recommended by respective specialties.

Lead and participate in safety huddles, multidisciplinary rounds, and shift sign-outs that are patient-centered.

Perform general medicine consults and rounding on established patients on the consult service, with expansion to Pavilion in 2025.

Manage patients admitted with COVID-19 in moderate care settings including heated high flow oxygen, prone positioning, and non-invasive ventilation (e.g., CPAP, BiPAP) and related medications.

Discharge patients, complete discharge documentation, and communicate discharge plans with other care providers.

Lead and participate in case conferences and collaborative educational series.

Orient and precept newly onboarding APPs, nurse practitioner students, physician assistant students, and medical students as appropriate.

Maintain knowledge of medical principles, practices, standards, and techniques in accordance with Michigan Medicine policies and procedures, Medical Staff Bylaws and state/federal laws/regulations.

Build and maintain professional relationships with physicians and other health care providers.

Seek consultation with faculty for concerns outside the scope of knowledge or skills.

Required Qualifications

Nurse Practitioners

Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.

Certification as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.

Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program or completion of required coursework to qualify for their certification exam.

Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the NCSBN.

Current DEA registration required.

ACLS/BLS certification required (BLS may be required unless ACLS was completed through UMHS Simulation Center; ACLS through UMHS Simulation Center will meet both requirements).

Current advanced practice provider employment and at least 1 year of clinical APP experience.

Physician Assistants

Satisfactory completion of an ARC-PA accredited PA program or predecessor agencies.

Certification by the NCCPA.

Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in Michigan.

State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required.

Current DEA registration required.

ACLS/BLS certification required (BLS may be required unless ACLS completed through UMHS Simulation Center; ACLS through UMHS Simulation Center will meet both).

Current advanced practice provider employment and at least 1 year of clinical APP experience.

Note: Employment is contingent upon successful credentialing and privileging. Applicants must meet all required qualifications prior to start date.

Desired Qualifications

2 years of advanced practice employment experience in inpatient internal medicine.

Inpatient internal medicine employment in the last 3-5 years.

Intensive care unit APP employment experience.

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple clinical tasks efficiently and effectively with attention to detail.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (oral and written).

Demonstrated ability to excel in a team-based model of care.

Demonstrated professional conduct in all situations.

Demonstrated high level of critical thinking and motivation to learn and participate in diverse patient care activities.

Able to work a flexible schedule and to don/doff PPE for isolation protocols.

Work Schedule

Shifts range from 10-12 hours, including day, evening, and night shifts. Possible cross-coverage shifts to other hospital medicine services. Holiday and weekend coverage is required. On-call responsibility for 48-72 hours per month.

Modes of Work

Positions may be eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually and may change.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U‑M and the United Physician Assistants of Michigan Medicine.
