Overview Liberty Mutual is building its dedicated Life Sciences Underwriting team to launch a Life Sciences Industry Practice within the Middle Market. The Life Sciences Underwriter will support a multi-line Property and Liability book for mid-sized Life Sciences companies, spanning biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, dietary supplements, analytical laboratories, digital health innovators, and related ecosystems. The role balances renewal activity with new business production, market expansion, and strategic business development. Travel up to 25% is expected. This role is hybrid: 2 days/week in office and 3 days/week working from home.
Responsibilities
New Business underwriting for profitable growth: review, evaluate, underwrite submissions, rate, determine terms and conditions, and present proposals to agents/brokers; negotiate deals as needed.
Client service post-win: coordinate with Liberty Account Analysts and Client Service Managers to service accounts and uphold the value proposition.
Portfolio management: develop and maintain relationships with brokers/agents and clients, support marketing of products, conduct site visits and renewal meetings, and build a long-term pipeline.
Identify and solicit a pipeline of opportunities; actively pursue individual success.
Articulate coverage differences in this specialized Life Sciences space with detail.
Maintain strong knowledge of legal, regulatory, and industry developments affecting underwriting.
Share knowledge through external thought leadership and mentor underwriters and partners.
Contribute to business and marketing planning with data-driven insights from portfolio analysis.
Participate in projects to grow Liberty's Life Sciences Industry Practice and drive underwriting/process excellence.
Collaborate across teams (Distribution, Operations, UW Support, Claims, Actuarial, North America Directors of Underwriting).
Qualifications
Degree in Business, Risk Management, or Scientific Field, or equivalent experience
Typically 7–10+ years of progressive underwriting experience and/or related business experience
Minimum 5 years of Life Sciences underwriting experience
CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred
Proven analytical ability to evaluate underwriting risks; strong knowledge of products, coverages, pricing, risk selection, and market dynamics in Life Sciences
Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable Life Sciences business
Ability to communicate complex analyses clearly in writing and verbally
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with internal and external stakeholders
Ability to address complex technical underwriting issues and implement related processes/workflows

Pay and Benefits Base pay range: $81,000.00/yr - $269,000.00/yr. Pay philosophy and compensation details are determined by factors including skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. Some roles may include commission and/or bonus earnings per the applicable compensation plan.
