Job Description

The Intelligent Sustainable Technologies Division within the Aerospace, Transportation and Advanced Systems Laboratory (ATAS) is seeking a motivated Student Research Assistant, starting Spring 2026, to collaborate on research projects in robotics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. The candidate will collaborate closely with full-time engineers to address challenging robot perception and manipulation problems in complex and unstructured environments. Responsibilities will include evaluating baselines, developing and training models, and running experiments on both simulated and real robot hardware. Strong math and programming skills are essential, as well as any prior experience in research environments. This role offers an exciting opportunity to conduct frontier robotics research and applying cutting edge techniques to solve real-world challenges.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience programming in Python Experience training ML models (PyTorch or Jax preferred)

Student Assistant

Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field Must be registered for at least 6 credit hours with your university during working semesters 3.0 or higher GPA

Preferred Qualifications

Initiative and a strong work ethic Prior research experience (academic, internship, personal projects) Knowledge/experience in robotics and controls Familiarity with Linux systems and Unix tooling C++ programming experience Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas
