Facilities Management is a department within University Services which is composed of the departments and people who deliver the non‑academic operations across the University of Minnesota system. FM is responsible for all buildings, grounds and the energy management needs of the Twin Cities campus. FM works to provide a safe, reliable and welcoming campus in support of the University's mission of teaching, research and outreach. FM's responsibilities include over 25 million square feet in more than 280 buildings across 1200 acres.
Landcare is an operations unit within Facilities Management, responsible for campus design and maintenance.
This position designs landscaping projects, manages landscape project installations, coordinates campus mitigation and restoration activities related to construction, manages campus assets, and directs daily activities of student assistants.
Position Responsibilities Designs landscaping projects – 35%
Assists University Landscape Architect with development of conceptual designs, drawings, reports and illustrations.
When delegated, represents University Landscape Architect/Landcare in meetings and/or written communications.
Leads development of detailed landscape plans and specifications from conceptual designs.
Generates detailed quantity take‑offs, cost estimates and project budgets.
Negotiates with customers regarding budget and design intent when appropriate.
Manages landscape project installations – 25%
Schedules labor and equipment resources and vendors activities to achieve project deadlines.
Directs the work of University crews and contractors.
Solicits price quotes and competitive bids from vendors.
Purchases materials and coordinates delivery for project installations.
Provides direction in the field when necessary.
Inspects work to ensure compliance with design intent and University standards.
Coordinates construction mitigation and restoration activities – 20%
Collaborates with project teams to establish campus protection expectations and procedures.
Inspects project sites to enforce campus protection procedures.
Coordinates site restoration services including scheduling staff and vendors.
Inspects site restoration work to ensure compliance with University standards.
Manages campus assets – 10%
Collects and processes field data for Landcare layers in campus GIS.
Assists in developing maps necessary for maintenance operations.
Assists with yearly plant replacement initiative.
Assists in developing site‑specific management plans.
Assists with directing daily activities of design students – 10%
Trains students in department procedures and standards.
Prioritizes and schedules student tasks.
Oversees student work.
Other duties as assigned.
This is a 100% time Civil Service position.
Position Qualifications Required (minimum) qualifications:
Accredited degree in landscape architecture and four years of experience in project design implementation (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
Proficiency with AutoCAD, ArcMap, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office software.
Preferred qualifications:
Six years of experience in site/landscape project design and implementation.
Professional registration as a landscape architect.
Physical and environmental requirements: Work is performed primarily in an office setting but also involves frequent visits to campus, including construction sites. Flexible work arrangements may be considered following successful completion of the one‑year probation period. Proper PPE will be provided and must be worn in designated construction areas.
Pay and Benefits Pay Range: $36.75 - $60.65; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
Time Appointment: 100%.
