Overview

Our client, a leading precision oncology research organization, is seeking a highly motivated and experienced

Senior Research Scientist, Biophysics

to support small molecule drug discovery efforts. The successful candidate will join a collaborative

Lead Discovery

team that includes experts in Biophysics, Bioassays, Structural Biology, Protein Sciences, and Compound Management. This hands-on laboratory position focuses on the biophysical and mechanistic characterization of small-molecule ligands binding to protein targets — playing a critical role in understanding molecular mechanisms of action and advancing the discovery pipeline. This position is based onsite in

South San Francisco, CA

and reports to the Principal Research Scientist, Biophysics. Key Responsibilities

Design and implement binding characterization studies of small molecules and proteins using

surface plasmon resonance (SPR)

platforms (Biacore S200 and 8K+). Conduct routine compound screening and advanced mechanistic studies using biophysical assays such as

nanoDSF, DLS, and Spectral Shift . Coordinate and manage external biophysical studies with

CRO partners . Analyze, interpret, and present experimental data to support SAR development and guide hit-to-lead and lead optimization efforts. Maintain detailed electronic lab records and prepare clear, publication-quality reports and presentations. Collaborate closely with cross-functional discovery teams to translate biophysical insights into actionable project outcomes. Qualifications

Education:

Ph.D. in Biophysics, Biochemistry, or a related discipline. Experience:

Minimum 3+ years of industry or relevant academic experience in small molecule drug discovery biophysics. Demonstrated expertise in designing, executing, and interpreting

biophysical characterization of small molecule–protein interactions

via SPR. Strong background in complementary biophysical techniques such as

TSA, DLS, Spectral Shift, NMR, or ITC . Familiarity with

data visualization and statistical software

(e.g., GraphPad, Prism) is a plus. Proven ability to troubleshoot, plan, and execute complex experiments independently. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present findings clearly to scientific and cross-functional teams. Attributes

Thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic research environment. Strong critical thinker and problem solver with proactive planning and risk-mitigation skills. Collaborative and team-oriented, with a passion for advancing scientific discovery. Curiosity, adaptability, and enthusiasm for contributing to innovative oncology research. Type:
