Overview
Product Support Sales Manager Energy & Transportation (E&T) is a growth-minded leader responsible for the safety and performance of several product support sales representatives (PSSRs) in electric power, oil & gas, and truck engine parts. This role reports to the E&T VP of Product Support and focuses on developing and supporting salespeople in expanding and deepening existing customer relationships, as well as identifying and initiating new ones. The leader will collaborate with their team, management, service department, finance and accounting, suppliers, and customers to ensure goals and objectives are met or exceeded.
Responsibilities
Develop and maintain a forward-looking view of addressable market opportunities based on intelligence from Caterpillar, trusted industry sources, and feedback from sales representatives and customers.
Assess and report on the team’s performance regularly to the VP of Energy & Transportation and make recommendations for achieving targets.
Ensure each team member has an individual learning plan, understands safety expectations, and has meaningful SMART goals; hold them accountable for executing these plans and goals.
Coordinate with service and parts departments to align on latest customer needs and priorities; ensure PSSRs update customers with realistic expectations.
Develop and support PSSRs—goal setting, ride-alongs and customer visits, training/coaching/feedback, and removal of obstacles to performance.
Engage with management, service, finance and accounting, suppliers, and customers to drive continuous improvement and customer satisfaction, ensuring goals are met or exceeded.
Contribute to the company’s safety culture and performance.
Develop and contribute to the relationship with Caterpillar by meeting with CAT reps and management, providing feedback, and participating in excellence programs as appropriate.
Provide technical product support to the team as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Proven commitment to developing and maintaining a culture of safety.
Proven successful sales or management experience in a technical field—preferably within the electric power generation industry.
Understanding of electric power generation types and related applications; basic understanding of truck engine parts needs.
Ability to work with the E&T VP to ensure plans align with Caterpillar core business and Wheeler priorities.
Ability to interpret and manage financial statements, budgets, and accounting principles (ROA, ROI, GP, EBITDA) to meet financial goals.
Team player with experience working with external parties (customers, suppliers) and related documents (specifications, change orders, contracts).
Ability to collaborate with internal departments (management, customer support/service, finance, safety, etc.).
Ability to attract, retain, and develop qualified sales talent.
Coaching leadership style to develop salespeople to higher performance.
Proven ability to set and achieve meaningful goals and help others do the same.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong listening skills.
Strong organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail.
Willingness to work the hours required to meet or exceed goals.
Minimum four-year bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Understanding of prime power and standby power generation markets and customers.
Understanding of electric utility markets, business models, and regulations (base load, peak loads, utility rate structures, natural gas commodities, emissions, natural gas engines, paralleling with utility, etc.).
Understanding of oil & gas markets (drilling, well-service, gas compression, etc.).
Master’s degree in business administration (MBA) or equivalent professional experience.
