Lead Protection & Controls Engineer

Rochester, NY
The Lead Protection & Controls Engineer reports to the Engineering Manager, NE Operations.
This role requires independent working on fast‑paced, technically complex design projects.
The engineer will support or lead substation engineering project teams with one‑line diagrams, relay one‑line diagrams, three‑line diagrams, schematics, control house panel layouts, relay selection, SCADA design, bills of materials and cable schedules.
Depending on location, a hybrid work schedule may be possible.
How will you contribute to the team?
Work within a multi‑discipline team to develop efficient and reliable electrical design packages for medium and high voltage substations.
Coordinate design activities to maintain project schedules, budget and quality requirements to ensure successful project completion.
Assist in site visits and station walkdowns, estimating, and attending project meetings.
Ensure design activities comply with applicable codes and standards, AtkinsRéalis policies and procedures, and Safety, Environmental, QA and QC requirements.
Design electrical substation facilities including one‑lines, three‑lines, schematics, and elementaries, wiring, interconnections, P&C calculations and reports.
Prepare specifications for material, equipment and construction work.
Deliver accurate and thorough electrical designs that meet industry standards and prudent engineering practices.
Review internal and external designs for code compliance, good design practice and constructability.
Coordinate design activities with other multi‑discipline project team members.
Provide construction support including resolving site queries, attending site meetings, and performing site inspections during the construction phase.
Maintain complete project documentation including engineering studies, calculations, design packages, as‑built requirements and data information.
Maintain good working relationships with internal groups such as engineering disciplines, Drafting and Project Management.
Mentor and provide guidance to developing engineers within the department.
What will you contribute?
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
Minimum of ten years of experience in P&C electrical design for a senior position.
Professional Engineer (PE) registration (or eligible for registration).
Experience with IEC 61850/Goose Messaging.
Proficiency in AutoCAD.
Knowledge of applicable industry standards including the NEC, NESC and IEEE; ability to perform independently and in a team environment and provide project ownership.
Knowledge of modern power system, protection and transmission and distribution systems.
Prior utility or utility‑consulting experience is a plus.
Strong client focus.
High level of interpersonal communication skills, including strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
Additional hours may be necessary as workload dictates.
Travel to client sites may be required.
