Job Summary:
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) serves as a key clinical provider and team member in the treatment and management of the surgical patient in the pre-, peri-, and post-operative setting. This role practices under the direction of the Chief of Surgery and other attending surgeons in a manner consistent with board regulations and hospital policy. Primarily, the APP will cover patients of BID-Needham physicians credentialed in the Department of Surgery. The APP is responsible for the initial assessment and admission of patients; assisting in the evaluation and preparation of patients for surgery; acting as first and second assistant in the operating room; and caring for patients following surgery and helping prepare patients for discharge.
Essential Responsibilities:
Performs comprehensive focused history & physical exams on surgical patients admitted through the ED and those held for Observation; initiates appropriate lab, radiology, and other tests required for evaluation of illness; reviews data to establish a patient health record and develop a diagnosis & treatment plan, with direct review by an MD.
Performs and interprets, at least to the point of recognizing deviations from normal, common laboratory, radiologic, cardiographic and other routine diagnostic procedures as privileged.
Interprets and correlates subjective and objective data to formulate a differential diagnosis and establishes a working diagnosis.
Formulates a treatment plan for medical problems within the scope of practice. Writes initial orders in coordination with the attending physician. Implements therapeutic interventions for specific conditions, when appropriate. Educates patients regarding their disease, treatments, related drug and treatment side effects and hazards.
Exercises judgment on problems requiring consultation, referral, or evaluation by the supervising surgeon or other health care professionals.
Performs routine procedures and manages simple conditions produced by infection or trauma; assists in the management of more complex illness and injury; may include assisting surgeons in conducting operations and taking initiative in performing evaluation and therapeutic procedures in response to life-threatening situations.
Performs specialized procedures, including suturing/stapling of major lacerations, wound debridement, blood draws, designated IV starts, central venous line placement, arterial line placement, venous cut downs, foley catheter insertion with/without bladder irrigation; and other specific procedures as delineated in privileges.
Handles a broad variety of surgical specialty and subspecialty procedures.
Participates in on-call coverage for in-house surgical patients as required and responds to Codes.
Assists Emergency Department physicians in cases of surgical consultation within the APP’s scope of practice.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Nurse Practitioner required.
Registered Nurse Practitioner license required, and certification in Basic Life Support; and Advanced Cardiac Life Support, or a Physician Assistant licensed by the MA Board of Physician Assistants which requires passing the NCCPA examination.
0–1 years related work experience in post-graduate Surgical APP (min 1 year required).
RNFA certification for Nurse Practitioner candidates.
Demonstrated analytical abilities and strong interpretative skills to formulate differential diagnoses and treatment plans in elective and emergent situations.
Experience with computer systems including web-based applications and Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access).
