Software Engineer, Full Stack (Chemistry) at Benchling. Benchling is expanding into chemistry and building tools to support a broad range of scientific workflows. This role is part of a full-stack chemistry team focused on accelerating science by creating powerful, intuitive tools integrated with Benchling’s notebook and core registry product. Responsibilities
Own projects end-to-end: drive features from concept to launch by translating product requirements and designs into well-scoped plans, implementing, testing, and deploying high-quality solutions. Collaborate cross-functionally: partner with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to build intuitive, high-impact features. Write clean, scalable code: contribute to both the frontend (React) and backend (Python) with high standards for readability, maintainability, and performance. Improve and refactor: address technical debt, modernize existing systems, and ensure long-term health and scalability of the codebase. Ensure quality and reliability: design and implement robust testing frameworks, monitoring, and metrics to maintain system stability and performance. Champion ownership and accountability: deliver end-to-end solutions and continuously improve how we build, ship, and scale our product. Optimize for scalability and performance: refine architecture and systems to handle growing complexity and demand. Embrace ambiguity and domain complexity: operate in a fast-paced environment with evolving scientific requirements and rapidly learn new technologies. Act with ownership and accountability: take responsibility for outcomes, push for clarity, follow through on commitments, and support others in doing the same. Qualifications
2+ years of professional software engineering experience Solid understanding of software engineering best practices, including writing clean, maintainable code, testing, version control, and working within Agile workflows Strong frontend development experience (React or similar) and backend development (Python); experience building scalable, user-friendly applications for complex scientific workflows Experience building scalable, reliable systems with attention to performance and user impact Proven ability to work across teams – partnering with product, design, and platform groups to ship cohesive solutions Strategic problem solving for complex, ambiguous technical challenges with focus on long-term impact, scalability, and user value Comfortable pushing back thoughtfully to advocate for quality, scalability, and maintainability Clear and effective communication, especially in cross-functional settings Curiosity and adaptability to learn about life sciences; fast-changing domain experience is a plus but not required How We Work
We offer a flexible hybrid work arrangement that prioritizes in-office collaboration. Employees are expected to be on-site 3 days per week (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday). Compensation and Benefits
Salary range: $141,104 to $190,906. Benchling uses a market-based compensation approach.
