Auburn or Hampden, ME; Hybrid 3 Day In Office Position Summary Good Shepherd Food Bank seeks a strategic and mission-driven Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead financial planning, operations, reporting, and organizational evaluation. As a key member of the Executive Team, the CFO will serve as a trusted advisor to the President and Board of Directors, driving financial strategy, risk management, and data-informed decision-making. This role also oversees the Research & Evaluation Team, ensuring client data is leveraged to guide strategy and deepen understanding of food insecurity across Maine. Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Financial Planning Develop and execute financial strategies aligned with organizational goals and mission. Lead long-term financial forecasting, modeling, and scenario planning. Advise the President and Board on financial implications of strategic decisions. Collaborate with senior leaders to integrate financial insights into organizational planning. Research & Evaluation Leadership Lead the Research & Evaluation body of work - collecting and analyzing client data through surveys and other tools. Use insights from data to inform strategic decision-making, program development, and resource allocation. Ensure data integrity, privacy, and ethical standards in all evaluation efforts. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate findings into actionable strategies that address food insecurity across Maine. Financial Operations & Compliance Oversee all financial functions including accounting, budgeting, payroll, and reporting. Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS, state and federal regulations, and audit requirements. Lead the annual budgeting process and monitor performance against budget. Manage cash flow, financial controls, and risk mitigation strategies. Reporting & Analysis Prepare and present timely, accurate financial reports to the Executive Team and Board. Provide actionable insights through financial analysis and performance metrics. Support grant reporting and ensure alignment of expenditures with funding requirements. Lead and mentor the finance team, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement. Serve as liaison to the Finance, Audit, and Investment Committees. External Relations Manage relationships with auditors, banks, and financial service providers. Represent the organization at external meetings and events, providing financial expertise. Milestones 30-Day Milestones: Orientation & Assessment Goal: Build foundational understanding and relationships. Meet with the President, Executive Team, and Board members to understand strategic priorities. Review current financial systems, reporting structures, and compliance processes. Assess the Finance Team’s structure, capabilities, and development needs. Begin relationship-building with external partners (auditors, banks, etc.). Review current budgets, forecasts, and grant reporting processes. Understand the scope and methodology of the Research & Evaluation Team’s work. Familiarize with Oracle NetSuite and other financial tools in use. Attend internal and external meetings to observe organizational culture and operations. 60-Day Milestones: Strategic Alignment & Early Impact Goal: Begin shaping financial strategy and operational improvements. Present initial observations and recommendations to the President and Board. Begin refining financial forecasting models and budget planning processes. Collaborate with Development to align revenue metrics, forecasting, and reconciliation. Evaluate internal controls and risk management strategies; identify gaps. Begin integrating Research & Evaluation insights into financial planning and strategic discussions. Support grant reporting and ensure expenditures align with project budgets. Establish regular financial reporting cadence for Executive Team and Board. Begin mentoring Finance Team members and identifying professional development opportunities. 90-Day Milestones: Execution & Influence Goal: Drive strategic initiatives and demonstrate leadership impact. Lead development of the next fiscal year’s budget in collaboration with department heads. Implement improvements to financial reporting, forecasting, and compliance processes. Launch or refine cash flow projection and monitoring systems. Present strategic financial insights to the Board, including risks and opportunities. Align Research & Evaluation outputs with organizational strategy and program development. Strengthen cross-functional collaboration across organization. Establish a roadmap for Finance Team growth and succession planning. Qualifications CPA or master’s degree in accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (or equivalent experience). Minimum 8 years of progressive financial leadership, including 4+ years in a nonprofit setting. Experience managing budgets of $50M+, capital projects, and high-turn inventory environments. Strong technical skills in financial systems; Oracle NetSuite preferred. Proven ability to communicate complex financial concepts to diverse audiences. Demonstrated success in building high-performing teams and fostering collaboration. Preferred Experience Nonprofit financial management and grant compliance.
