Medical Health Physicist role at University of Washington. The Environmental Health and Safety Department provides health and safety programs across campus locations, Harborview, and UW Medical Centers. Responsibilities

Program direction and control ensuring regulatory requirements for assigned radiation safety programs are met. Independently work under general supervision and collaborate with the UW EH&S Radiation Safety Officer and other Health Physicists to align program requirements across Radiation Safety programs. Manage the following Radiation Safety Programs: Medical Radiation Safety, Shielding, Radiation Safety Section Support, EH&S Department Support and Other Duties As Assigned. Develop, implement, and maintain safety programs for the medical use of radioactive material and x-ray devices in accordance with industry standards and regulatory and institutional requirements. Assure compliance with the University’s radioactive material license conditions and regulations issued by state and federal agencies; provide policy guidance for radiation protection. Oversee radiation protection for patient procedures involving radioactive materials; coordinate with UW Medicine partners to ensure consistent procedures; conduct surveys; advise staff on protection measures; and ensure safety for workers and visitors. Develop and maintain an inspection program for nuclear medicine and radiation oncology clinics; cross-train staff to support tasks and review work for accuracy. Develop, implement, and maintain training for medical personnel regarding safe use of ionizing radiation. Consult with UW departments and partners regarding regulatory requirements and employee concerns for medical use of radiation and radioactive materials. Investigate problems or complaints, coordinate with the UW RSO to report events to regulatory authorities as required. Collaborate with departments to develop and maintain radiation safety procedures; prepare revisions to procedures and the Radiation Safety Manual. Identify and analyze data to monitor medical use of radioactive materials; provide data for reports, audits, and inspections; advise the UW RSO on resources and actions to maintain compliance and effectiveness. Conduct testing and audits of medical x-ray devices; cross-train staff to support tasks and review work. Conduct surveys of radiation therapy areas to verify compliance with exposure limit regulations; maintain, and review related records. Perform leak tests of sealed sources and take corrective action as needed. Collaborate with UW RSO and clinical staff to minimize radiation exposures (ALARA). Collaborate with UW medical physicists and Radiation Safety staff on dose estimates and evaluation of applications for radiation use on human subjects. Coordinate oversight of the personnel dosimetry program; investigate dosimeter results that exceed ALARA levels and document findings. Attend and participate in medical center safety committees as assigned. Propose new or revised University policy, procedures, and guidelines for safe use of radioactive materials; assist in license applications and amendments. Address discrepancies from inspections and audits of the program. Other Programs

Shielding: develop and maintain safety programs for shielding; review facility designs; perform shielding calculations and prepare reports. Radiation Safety Section Support: cross-train, perform semi-annual leak tests, conduct annual program audit, attend meetings. EH&S Department Support: collaborate with other EH&S groups, comply with policies, track time for key clients, support strategic planning and metrics. Minimum Requirements

Master’s degree in Health Physics, Engineering, or Science Three years of experience in a radiation safety program at a hospital or medical center Equivalent education/experience may substitute for all minimum qualifications except where legal requirements apply (license/certification/registration). Additional Requirements

Ability to make professional judgments based on radiation safety principles. Familiarity with various ionizing radiation sources including unsealed and sealed sources. Technical proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Desired Qualifications

Experience in a university setting radiation safety program Certification by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) Working Conditions

Work in environments with radioactive and other hazardous materials and/or radiation-emitting equipment. Must be knowledgeable to respond to inquiries regarding radiation exposure at University locations. Other Requirements

Licensed to operate a motor vehicle in Washington or ability to obtain within six months. Frequent travel within the UW Seattle campus to client offices and facilities; occasional travel to UW decentralized offices, labs, and medical centers. Compensation, Benefits And Position Details
