Overview This position supports departmental goals by providing technical assistance and consultation regarding patient cultures and instrumentation in the Microbiology technical section, and through the performance of timely and accurate blood and body fluid analysis in this specialty. Advanced technical expertise is required to ensure complex issues are resolved, technical problems are investigated thoroughly while applying troubleshooting techniques.

Minimum Qualifications

Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS)

California State License for Clinical Laboratory Technology, or equivalent specialty license or certificate (e.g., Public Health Microbiologist, Clinical Chemistry Scientist, Clinical Hematology Scientist, or Clinical Immuno-Hematology Scientist). If working only in subspecialties, license must be current and renewed as required. The incumbent is also required to acquire 24 units of continuing education biannually as required to maintain license.

CLS with experience in bench work and other tasks performed in the Clinical Microbiology Lab.

Technical knowledge in one or more of the following sections: Transfusion Services, Chemistry, Flow Cytometry, Hematology/Hemostasis/Special Coagulation, Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Lab, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Pathology, Point of Care Testing, Special Chemistry, and/or Toxicology.

Knowledge of hospital and laboratory regulations and requirements (e.g., CDPH, CAP, TJC, AABB, FDA, NAACLS, FACT, OSHA) for testing and laboratory safety.

Ability to maintain the security of confidential information and exercise judgment, tact and discretion in handling sensitive information.

Ability to function and work in a diverse work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal candidate includes at least two Bacteriology benches (e.g., Blood Bench, Urine Bench, Antimicrobial), lead experience with new test validations and technical protocol writing and/or revisions.

Knowledge of quality assurance, quality system essentials, continuous quality improvement, metrics, data analysis and audit processes.

Ability to recognize processes that could lead to failures; ability to resolve and report errors and aberrant results appropriately.

Technical knowledge to troubleshoot instrument/equipment problems and utilize appropriate resources to resolve problems.

Outstanding written and oral communication skills; ability to lead discussions and articulate test procedures, with effective presentations.

Strong organization, time management, prioritization, strategic thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships and to adapt to supervision and changes based on evaluation.

Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), EPIC EMR, hospital incident reporting systems (e.g., RL Solutions).

Knowledge of personal computer, word processing, data management, and spreadsheet software.

Ability to educate trainees, residents and physicians with clear and concise communication.

Ability to maintain reports, documents and records according to policy and regulations.

Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment and meet turnaround times while maintaining high performance.

Department Overview In support of UC Davis Health's mission, the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine provides high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic care to patients, including UCDHS and affiliates, through examination and interpretation of tissues, blood and other body fluids. The department is CAP-accredited and operates across multiple facilities. It is a large ancillary service with extensive scope and impact.
