(GMHILL) is a fast growing woman-owned small business (WOSB) headquartered in Jacksonville, FL, with offices in Alexandria, VA, Virginia Beach, VA, Tallahassee, FL, Panama City, FL, Beaufort, SC, Houston, TX and Thomasville, GA. GMHILL provides a wide range of engineering, architecture, and construction services, including facility assessments, building inspections, design-build, and construction management for federal, state, and local agencies. GMHILL emphasizes safety and high-quality performance, demonstrated by CPARS, safety metrics, and repeat business. We are expanding our project management staff to support current workloads and are seeking a Structural Engineer who wants to contribute to the firm’s mid-stage growth.
If you have at least 10 years of experience as a Structural Engineer and experience delivering on A/E IDIQs and D/B MATOC/MACCs for federal Defense and Civilian Departments, we would like to talk with you.
Position Summary
The position of Structural Engineer III requires thorough knowledge of structural design and engineering techniques. You will be responsible for planning and conducting independent work that requires judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. Your expertise will devise new approaches to problems, and prepare or modify drawings, specifications, calculations, charts and graphs, and monitor work for compliance to applicable codes, accepted engineering practices and GMHILL standards.
Key Tasks Perform structural design and analysis calculations using governing codes and standards, engineering formulas, skills, and experience.
Layout and detail portions of projects using schematic layout by project lead engineer. May be assigned responsibility for schematic or conceptual layouts when qualified.
Provide drawings for own designs and produce sketches to incorporate in drawings by Designers/Drafters.
Research design options and document findings for project lead engineer.
Review shop drawings.
Assume the lead engineer’s role on assigned projects.
May serve as Project Engineer and as a designated client contact on smaller, less complex projects.
May direct and supervise other Designers/Drafters activities.
Coordinate work with other disciplines such as architectural, mechanical, electrical, etc.
Coordinate routine contract administration with project administrator.
Use computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering design documents.
Attend and participate in client and company meetings.
Perform field activities such as observing and recording existing field conditions, taking and verifying measurements within the project area.
Organize, draft, and coordinate technical documents.
Demonstrate capability and experience in managing and performing projects in a fast-paced environment.
Coordinate with GMHILL Construction group personnel on D/B projects, if needed.
May participate in proposals, presentations, and business development activities.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and Training Requirements Registered Florida professional engineer certification required.
Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, and over ten years of experience with advanced knowledge in structural engineering.
Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering, desirable.
Minimum 10 years’ experience in increasingly responsible structural engineering positions.
Federal project and task order experience (Defense and/or Civilian Agency), preferred.
LEED AP BD+C, a plus.
Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite.
Skill and Competency Requirements Self-starter, highly motivated, enthusiastic, able to provide structural engineering rigor while operating within contractual scope, budget, and schedule requirements for project deliverables on multiple concurrent projects.
Customer service – able to personally provide high level interactive service to targeted customer base, building relationships, and acting as internal company advocate.
Team orientation and interpersonal skills; ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with all levels within and external to the organization.
Communication – effective and professional written and verbal communication.
Organization and time management – able to work independently with minimal supervision, plan and prioritize multiple actions with attention to detail.
Leadership – ability to train, develop, coach, and mentor others.
Systems and software proficiency — REVIT, AutoCAD, structural analysis software, Ram Structural System, Mathcad, Enercalc, and Microsoft Office.
Knowledge of Whole Building Design Guide and structurally related UFC.
