The faculty of Philosophy at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for a 9-month, full time, tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor to begin August 16, 2026. We understand philosophical issues in artificial intelligence as anchored in core philosophical debates. Such debates may involve fields in which the Department has been traditionally strong or related fields, such as philosophy of science, epistemology, and bioethics, political philosophy, environmental philosophy, philosophy of technology, philosophy of mind and the philosophy of law. The McCausland College of Arts and Sciences is home to the Ann Johnson Institute for Science, Technology & Society which hosts a variety of programs and conferences that are of interest to philosophers working on AI. There are several interdisciplinary initiatives at USC that have completed new hires in this area, including the Linguistics program and the Law School. The successful candidate will teach 2/2 courseload and have the usual service duties. USC has various internal grant opportunities and mentoring programs for junior faculty. The Department of Philosophy offers an undergraduate major in Philosophy, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy. We are the only Ph.D. and MA granting institution in Philosophy in South Carolina. We are a welcoming, collegial, philosophically pluralistic department. For more information about the Department of Philosophy, please visit our website at
