Overview
Summary: Under the direction of Clinical Nurse Manager (Inpatient)/Program Director (Partial) and Unit Charge RN, the Behavioral Health Specialist I (BHS I) provides care and safety to children and adolescents as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team. The BHS I contributes to the day-to-day schedule and structure of a therapeutic milieu and participates in implementation, observation, and documentation under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Responsibilities
Participate in maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment; actively engage with assigned children during the shift. Develop and operationalize the milieu care plan for assigned patients in accordance with department and unit policies; maintain and document patient observation levels as ordered. Provide support to visiting parents and share information as requested by the treatment team. Supervise assigned children in daily routines and assist with activities of daily living and basic hygiene needs. Identify, report, and resolve potential issues on the unit; demonstrate appropriate incident follow-up and document in the medical record. Participate in restraint debriefings and carry out daily assignments as delegated by the Charge RN; report back prior to shift change. Intervene in disruptive milieu or unsafe situations with timely therapeutic interventions for distressed children. Maintain appropriate boundaries; complete required documentation (incident reports, intakes, etc.). Actively participate in patient care planning under the direction of the primary/charge RN and support initial therapeutic alliance with patient and family on admission. Assist with transition processes within the hospital environment and document objective observations within shift notes. Review milieu care plans and problem lists daily; suggest revisions based on observations; communicate plans to unit staff and other providers. Participate in treatment team rounds, patient-specific discussions, hand-off reports, and staff development forums; adapt care style to meet diverse patient needs. Co-lead community meetings, milieu meetings, and social skills groups; support and participate in recreation and other program activities. Model therapeutic interpersonal interactions with patients and families; participate in therapy groups with clinicians and support recreation therapy programs. Handle crisis situations safely using least restrictive options and escalate as needed; seek supervision to improve performance. Minimum Qualifications
Baccalaureate Degree in a Human Service field preferred; other education/experience may be substituted at the Hiring Manager’s discretion. Aptitude and willingness to learn role-related skills; ability to provide care across the life span with sensitivity to aging, development, and culture. Safety Care Certification and crisis de-escalation training; ability to remain calm in crises and make quick, rational decisions to maintain safety. Physical ability to perform required tasks (e.g., lift up to 50 pounds; stand, walk, sit; occasional running; assist with positioning and safe handling of patients). Six months to one year of direct childcare work with emotionally impaired youth or equivalent experience.
