Horticulturist/Event Assistant GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
Assists with set up and preparation for events, particularly in outdoor rental spaces.
Assists with set up for events. Assists with gardening tasks throughout the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens and the City of Cheyenne. Serves as back up staff for the Tilted Tulip Gift Shop, the Botanic Garden Welcome Desk and Events.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists with set up and take down for events in all rented spaces, indoors and outdoors.
Cleans and grooms outdoor rental areas and nearby garden areas to ensure they are safe and attractive for those attending events.
Plants annuals, perennials, and woody plants in gardens and displays.
Waters plants on the Solar Patio, Observation Deck, and other areas as assigned.
Mixes and applies fertilizer as directed in the course of watering.
Pulls weeds and applies herbicides to kill weeds.
Works harmoniously with staff, volunteers and interns from all backgrounds, identities and ages, orientation, and abilities.
Maintain a safe environment for the Botanic Gardens staff, volunteers, and visitors.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to clean indoor spaces and use a schematic diagram to set up furnishings in indoor rental spaces.
Knowledge of gardening practices.
Skill in use of blowers, rakes and other tools.
Skill in watering plants.
Knowledge of weed control techniques.
Knowledge and ability to use technology including basic computer skills and word processing software.
Strong communication skills with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
Ability to be organized, creative, and effective when priorities change rapidly due to changing conditions.
Ability to work independently and to exercise reasonable judgment in decision making with minimal supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB Required: High School diploma or equivalent.
Preferred: Some post‑secondary coursework in horticulture, botany, or plant science.
Possession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid driver’s license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio‑visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain the physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 45 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
Working Environment Work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; cold, warm, humid, hot air may regularly occur; exposure to radiant energy and inclement weather; exposure to cleaning solutions, fertilizers, agricultural chemicals, and pest control agents. Work may take place in outdoor environments in different seasons.
