Overview

Assistant Researcher in the Translational Thoracic Oncology laboratory of Dr. Burt at UCLA. The role involves performing research under guidance with opportunity to progress as an independent researcher. Primary study focuses on a novel mass spectrometry platform (the MSPen) for rapid diagnosis of lung cancer and rapid determination of clinically relevant driver mutations to guide systemic therapy. The project extends to rapid intraoperative diagnosis and margin assessment; MSPen probes for minimally invasive surgery and endoscopy are being designed, printed, and tested. Additional MSPen work includes projects in esophageal cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma to address similar gaps. A second project investigates biomarkers of response and resistance to immune checkpoint blockade in malignant pleural mesothelioma and lung cancer. Both projects are NIH-funded. The laboratory aims to develop the Translational Thoracic Oncology program in collaboration with Dr. Burt, who leads the Division of Thoracic Surgery at UCLA. The position supports manuscript preparation, abstract presentation at scientific meetings, and assistance with grant proposals. The Assistant Researcher may help supervise other researchers in the lab and has opportunities for advancement. Proteomics and/or tumor immunology experience is desirable. This is a non-Senate, 12-month position with step commensurate with experience. Start date: 12/2024. Responsibilities

Study design, data acquisition, statistical computation, and literature review and manuscript/grant preparation. Ability to work on multiple projects efficiently and effectively. Work independently on scientific projects. Assist with preparation of grant proposals. Prepare manuscripts for publication in scientific journals. Communicate well with other scientists at UCLA and other institutions. Collaborate with the Principal Investigator to develop the translational research laboratory in the Division of Thoracic Surgery. Supervise undergraduates, graduate students, and new postdoctoral trainees in the lab. Train various personnel in platforms relevant to ongoing projects and contribute to the design and execution of experiments. Qualifications
