Overview
Field Tech - Power Systems Tech I, II, III, or IV is a field service role responsible for testing, servicing, and maintaining various power transmission and distribution equipment. Opportunities span low to high voltage systems and associated switchgear, transformers, and controls. This role may require travel and on-call responsibilities depending on assignments. Responsibilities
Inspect, test, troubleshoot, start-up, and data-collect electrical systems from low to high voltage (up to 500 kV) and perform related testing on switchgear and circuit breakers. Inspect, maintain, test, and repair transformers, circuit breakers, and related equipment (45 KVA to 130 MVA, dry type and/or oil-filled). Perform maintenance, testing, and reconditioning of circuit breakers (low voltage 480V, molded case and air-magnetic) and medium voltage up to 15 kV (air-magnetic and vacuum). Work with SF6-filled equipment and gas-insulated switchgear (desirable but not required). Test and inspect low and medium voltage cable installations; operate high-voltage test equipment (e.g., Doble Power Factor test sets). Perform start-up, troubleshooting, and repair on controls and transfer schemes; rotate on-call duties and respond to customer emergencies as needed. Ensure all work complies with applicable regulatory laws and safety procedures. Coordinate with customers and internal teams to resolve issues and deliver safe, reliable power solutions. Qualifications – Field Tech I/II/III/IV
Field Tech I High School diploma/GED and at least 1 year of related experience. Knowledge of NETA, NEC, OSHA, NFPA. Strong problem-solving ability, communication skills, and customer service mindset. Valid driver’s license if vehicle is used. Field Tech II High School diploma/GED and at least 2 years of related experience. NETA Level II Certification. Safety-focused with knowledge of lockout/tagout, arc-flash, and other electrical hazard controls. Additional capabilities similar to Tech I with progressive responsibilities. Field Tech III High School diploma/GED and at least 5 years of related experience. NETA Level III Certification. Ability to mentor Level I and II Techs, manage routine to moderately complex tasks, maintain records, and oversee safety for others. Ability to perform electrical power switching and lead projects. Field Tech IV Associate degree or equivalent experience with at least 5 years of related experience, or 10 years in related roles. NETA Level IV Certification. Ability to supervise large projects and multiple crews, mentor junior techs, and perform complex investigations and evaluations. Strong leadership and independent work capabilities. Location: Nationwide. Travel: Up to 70%. Compensation: Field Tech I–IV range from $25 to $65 per hour, depending on skillset, certification, and experience; overtime eligible. Daily per diem for travel when overnight stays are required. Relocation: Relocation assistance available for highly qualified candidates.
