Duties
Operate the institutional mail room, receiving and discharge functions, and process inmate mail and documents.
Handle legal documents such as writs and detainers, including interpretation of judgments for filing.
Coordinate inmate bus movement, transfers, and releases (temporary and final).
Perform sentence calculation, stay current on sentencing laws, court processes, and court directives.
Maintain security of the institution and enforce correctional security procedures.
Collaborate with law‑enforcement agencies and other federal and non‑federal partners.
Maintain accurate records, file archiving, and certification of records.
Conditions of Employment
U.S. Citizenship is required.
Foreign nationals must meet all applicable background‑check requirements.
Applicants must complete a satisfactory urinalysis, physical, and background investigation.
Qualifications
Education:
No substitution for specialized experience at this grade level.
Experience:
Minimum one year of specialized experience equivalent to GL 07, directly related to mailroom, receiving, or inmate release functions.
Medical Requirement:
Must be physically capable of prolonged walking, standing, and restraining inmates. Must have no medical condition that poses a hazard.
CTAP Eligibility (if applicable):
Must meet CTAP eligibility, score ≥ 85, and submit required documentation.
Knowledge:
Understanding of federal law, sentencing, and court procedures.
Skills:
Ability to communicate orally and in writing; supervise inmates; maintain records; interpret regulations.
Additional Information
Maximum entry age of 36 for initial appointment.
1‑year probationary period during which performance and conduct are evaluated.
TP (time‑in‑grade) requirements must be met by closing date.
