Classification Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience as a Histology Technician; or licensed as a Histology Technologist.

Job Description Rocky Point Laboratory – Gross Room The incumbent is responsible for the accurate and timely gross examination and dictation of specimens, cassette printing, bottle identification, and case number designation. The individual will receive and correlate paperwork with specimens received, work and communicate with personnel from submitting accounts as well as courier, resolve discrepancies in collaboration with others to expedite cases, and dispose of tissue from completed surgical specimens. A positive attitude to promote a good working environment and morale is expected on a daily basis. The role may include training new employees and/or rotating students.

Electron Microscopy Under general supervision, perform routine and advanced transmission electron microscope laboratory procedures related to the processing of specimens for clinical purposes. Prepare specimens for observation under an electron microscope using specialized techniques. Maintain diamond knives, trim tissue to microscope dimension using an ultramicrotome, perform specialized photographic techniques to capture and produce digital images, and manage the digital archives of images for electronic access.

Staining Perform specialized techniques such as immunofluorescence and immunochemistry related to specimen processing for clinical purposes. Develop specimen preparation techniques under general supervision when necessary.

Specialized Techniques Perform processing and specialized techniques on muscle, nerve, and kidney specimens, including staining, IHC, and immunofluorescence. Complete accurate and timely gross examination and dictation of anatomic pathology specimens, followed by cassette printing, bottle identification, and case number designation.

Maintenance Maintain electron microscopes, including basic troubleshooting, and ancillary equipment such as ultramicrotome, cryostat, fume hood, and digital camera. Assist manager with inventory control of chemicals and other supplies needed for diagnostic electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, and immunochemistry techniques. Clean laboratory equipment and spaces, including bench-tops and storage areas.

Records and Safety Maintain records and files of specimens prepared and photographed. Perform laboratory safety procedures and ensure compliance with quality control standards. Assist with administrative tasks such as computer assistance with manuals, MSDS, and chemical inventory. Oversee inventory of the lab and place orders as needed, keeping chemical and biohazard elements properly maintained, stored, and disposed of.

Salary: $24.00 – $26.44 per hour; commensurate with education and experience.

Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience as a Histology Technician; or licensed as a Histology Technologist.

Preferred Qualifications Detailed written and verbal communication with client services, physician offices, pathologists, transcriptionists, and couriers. Ability to interact professionally with UF physicians, client physicians, and other health professionals. Ability to work in a potentially stressful environment, learn various aspects of lab operations quickly, and knowledge of medical terminology. Prior experience in a gross room or histology lab, experience with Epic or other LIS, and certification by The Electron Microscopy Society of America.
