Overview
DUTIES As a sworn member of the Los Angeles Police Department, a Police Officer maintains order, enforces laws and ordinances, and protects life and property; works with neighborhood associations and community members as a planner, community organizer, problem solver and information link; issues citations, makes arrests, prepares reports, and provides information to the public and departmental units; and does related work. Salary $91,224 - $124,236 annual salary. Salary range applies to Police Officer I & II. The annual salary is at the start of the pay range. The current salary range is subject to change. Minimum Qualifications / Requirements
At least 20 years of age at the time of application and 21 years of age by police academy graduation. Graduation from a high school, or equivalent from an institution, or a California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate is required. A two or four year college degree from an accredited or foreign institution may be substituted for the high school requirements. Documentation demonstrating that the institution is accredited must be submitted prior to taking the written test. Be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
A valid Class C driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles is required at the time of appointment. Candidates will not be eligible for appointment if their DMV record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation such as DUI. Because this class has been designated as Safety Sensitive in accordance with City Policy, a drug and alcohol screening test may be required prior to appointment and during employment.

Background Investigation : The investigation begins with completion of a Personal History Statement and will include fingerprinting, and a background interview. The investigation also includes checks of employment, police, financial, education, and military records and interviews with family members, neighbors, supervisors, co-workers, and friends. Findings are valid for 12 months. A polygraph examination will be conducted prior to your field investigation to confirm information obtained during the selection process. The processing guidelines for the polygraph examination may be revised periodically. All candidates will be processed according to the current guidelines, not the guidelines which were in place when they applied. Convictions : Any conviction by a state, the federal government, or a foreign government of a crime, the punishment for which would have been imprisonment in a federal penitentiary or the state prison (felony) will result in a disqualification. Note: Federal law prohibits anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor involving domestic violence from carrying a firearm.
Physical Fitness Qualifier
(PFQ): You must complete the PFQ at least once prior to your medical evaluation. Your score is advisory and valid for 12 months. Retakes are allowed. If you score less than 50, you are encouraged to attend the Candidate Advancement Program (CAP). CAP can help with selection and academy transition. If you live more than 150 miles from Los Angeles, contact your mentor to arrange a PFQ while in town. Information regarding CAP is online.
Medical Evaluation : Includes a thorough evaluation by a City physician. A cardiac stress test may be required. Medical results are valid for up to 12 months. A PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION will be conducted; results are valid for 12 months for the interview and 24 months for written tests.
Health / Physical Condition : You must be in excellent health with no conditions that would restrict your ability to safely complete Academy training and perform police work. Weight must be appropriate for height and build.
Vision : Uncorrected distance vision must not exceed 20/70 in either eye; best eye at least 20/40; with glasses, corrected to at least 20/30. If contact lenses are worn, vision must be at least 20/30 with lenses. If LASIK performed, vision must be at least 20/30. Ability to name colors and absence of other visual impairments are required.
Certification and Appointment : Before you can be hired as a Police Officer, you must successfully complete all required steps.
Academy Training : Six-month, 40-hour per week training and orientation program with full pay.
Assignments & Benefits : Regular appointments to the class of Police Officer and an eighteen-month probationary period. After the Academy, assignments are made to patrol divisions. Benefits include annual paid vacations, holidays, medical and dental plans, sick leave, and retirement.
