Summary The

Tax Accountant

assists with the preparation of timely and accurate tax/licensing requirements. S/he maintains compliance of all indirect tax matters of the organization. The

Tax Accountant

works with internal/external customers for reporting, auditing, and training.

Roles and Responsibilities The

Tax Accountant

will possess competency in the following areas in order to perform his/her role in a safe, productive, and effective manner. Ensures accurate, complete, and timely accumulation, reporting, and record retention of tax information, including sales/use, GST/PST/VAT, fuel, gross receipts, and other non-payroll taxes

Communicates invoice and financial reporting revisions to appropriate parties, and prepares adjusting journal entries

Prepares refund requests

Cross trains with and supports Contractor Compliance and Licensing Specialist in determining, obtaining and maintaining appropriate licensing as required by the business

Communicates with project management to determine tax status of project and special jurisdiction or reporting requirements

Manages collection, accuracy, completion, and retention of exemption certificates

Coordinates and manages tax audits and inquiries

Provides clear documentation of information used to prepare returns and to support taxation decisions

Remits tax liabilities and provides details for financial reporting to internal departments

Researches taxability of transactions, identifying relevant variables such as jurisdiction, exempt status of job, nature of material or service to be taxed, etc.

Provides training and support to departments within the organization on tax matters, promoting awareness and understanding of tax implications throughout the organization

Seeks automation opportunities to improve efficiency and accuracy of processes within the organization

Supports income tax compliance by compiling and summarizing apportionment data

Tracks and pays personal and real property tax liabilities

Assists corporate tax manager with updating tax depreciation schedules

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field and 3 years of tax experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Construction industry experience preferred

Proficiency in Microsoft software programs such as Excel, Word, Adobe and Outlook

Experience extracting data from enterprise software (Vista and Vertex experience preferred)

Ability to calculate mathematical figures such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, and proportions to practical situations

Ability to maintain effective relationships with regulatory authorities, senior management, project management, and internal customers

Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, with a high level of professionalism, reliability, and integrity

Detail oriented; able to prepare documents in a complete and easy to follow manner

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

Ability to prioritize workflow to meet deadlines

Ability to interpret complex legal documents, government instructions and regulations to apply concepts to real world situations
