At Kiewit, one of our guiding principles on every project and in every office is, “Nobody Gets Hurt.” We’re currently looking for a Safety Specialist who will create, support and audit our programs which reinforce our commitment to safety. The Safety Specialist reports to the Project Safety Manager and focuses on the successful implementation and support of the Site Specific Safety Plan in the field. Location: Eastern District (primarily New York, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC areas as part of Kiewit’s Eastern District). Employment Type: Full Time. Base Compensation: $72,000/yr - $85,000/yr. This role requires travel to various project sites and may involve working in diverse environments.
Responsibilities
Assist in the development, review, updating, and communication of the Site Specific Safety Plan (SSSP) to all stakeholders, including subcontractors
Collaborate with craft personnel daily in the field to foster buy-in of the safety program and promote ownership of safety initiatives
Exercise Stop Work Authority to ensure adherence to company policies, regulations, work plans, and detailed work packs
Plan, prioritize, and problem-solve with operations in the field based on leading indicator trends and upcoming work
Encourage, support, inspire, and advise staff and craft employees to execute the SSSP
Assist with maintaining project files in compliance with OSHA/MSHA regulations and internal policies, including accident/injury files
Assist with first aid and maintain relationships with emergency medical services and clinics
Assist with incident investigations and implementation of effective corrective actions
Complete daily hazard inspections and assist operations, craft, and subcontractors with corrective actions
Review work plans, work packs, and detailed work plans prior to the start of work
Provide safety training on policies, procedures (OSHA/MSHA, NCCER, SIMS), orientation, and client-specific requirements
Qualifications
OSHA 30, 500 and 510 certifications
Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Safety, Public Health or related field is preferred
Knowledge of construction safety, current Federal and OSHA requirements
Certification as a Safety Professional or Emergency Medical Technician is preferred
Working knowledge of computers with experience in Microsoft Word and Excel
Strong organizational and time management skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Attention to detail with the ability to recognize discrepancies
Strong work ethic and willingness to do what it takes to get the job done
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Ability to access all points of a construction site in varied climates and environments

Work productively and meet deadlines timely
Communicate effectively with supervisors, employees, and others in a team or individual setting
Perform work safely and follow oral and written instructions, signs, equipment use, and policies
Work during normal hours and overtime/weekends as required
