The NYC Department of Buildings is responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code and Zoning Resolution. This position performs supervisory work in the inspection of buildings, other structures, and/or devices in the assigned discipline/s for conformity with NYC Construction Codes, Department rules, other pertinent laws and rules, and approved plans and specifications. The role may require operating a motor vehicle and may involve remote work up to 2 days per week under the Remote Work Pilot Program. Responsibilities

Assist and support the Chief and Assistant Chief with daily operations. Monitor, adjust and approve inspectors’ routes and submitted inspection records per relevant protocols. Supervise inspectorial staff; prioritize, assign and coordinate workflow to ensure timely achievement of unit goals. Respond to, report and investigate accidents, incidents and complaints; issue violations, summonses and stop work orders; verify licenses of onsite workers when conducting inspections in the field. Explain and enforce laws and rules related to the field. Coordinate and conduct joint inspections with other inspectors and perform special field inspections. Testify as needed, including at ECB, depositions, and court appearances. Study drawings to obtain details for inspections and maintain records and reports. Train subordinates in their duties and review applications relevant to the field when applicable. Represent the Department at meetings and conferences with representatives of public agencies and private entities. Possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle driver license in New York State for the performance of duties. Minimum Qualifications

Two years of full-time satisfactory experience performing one or a combination of: (a) plumbing installation or inspection, or (b) superintendent of plumbers; or One year of full-time experience as described above with one year of formal training or education in a relevant program; or Sixty credits toward a degree in civil/structural/Mechanical engineering or related field; or Completion of a two-year plumbing apprentice program or a professional engineer/registered architect license. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered; for Assignment Levels II–IV, additional experience may be required as specified in the original job posting. Ability to read and interpret blueprint plans and specifications; knowledge of NYC Construction Codes and related laws is preferred. Preferred Skills

Working knowledge of the NYC Construction Codes, Zoning Resolution, and other applicable laws and rules under the jurisdiction of the Department of Buildings. Computer literacy; strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain technical requirements in lay terms. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications. This position is funded by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) for inspection of homeless shelters. Continued assignment is contingent on funding from DHS. All positions are Citywide. You may be reassigned or your work location may change with appropriate notice. Residency: New York City residency is not required for this position.
