Responsibilities

Maintain a valid driver’s license during employment.

Drive to and from recovery locations safely and in a timely manner.

Conduct detailed physical assessment of potential donors and document any visible signs of communicable diseases.

Observe the donor anatomy as required (e.g., rolling the cadaver, lifting extremities).

Draw cadaveric blood or obtain pre-transfused samples from the admitting hospital when necessary.

Perform sterile corneoscleral excision and aseptic preservation of tissue for transplantation.

Perform non-sterile whole eye enucleation for medical research.

Assist in field training of new Tissue Recovery Specialists on technique, documentation, and skills.

Maintain professional interactions with referring hospitals, funeral homes, law enforcement, DonorConnect, and the Office of the Medical Examiners.

Maintain understanding of Standard Operating Procedures for the Recovery Department.

Complete annual Bridge/LMS training per University of Utah Health Academics policy.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific discipline or equivalent (one year of education can substitute for two years of related work experience) required.

Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.

Certification as an Eye Bank Technician, Ophthalmic Technician, or Tissue Bank Specialist is preferred.

Experience with aseptic technique and medical terminology is preferred.

Patient-sensitive position requiring immunization per CDC standards and hospital policy; limited exemptions may be made for medical or religious objections.

Applicants must demonstrate ability to perform essential functions of the job as outlined.

Preferences / Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of University of Utah Health/ULEB/FDA/EBAA policies and procedures.

Knowledge of hospital and Office of the Medical Examiner procedures regarding organ/tissue donation in line with FDA/EBAA policies.

Adherence to PROMISE standards and University Health Academics core values.

General medical knowledge to determine donor eligibility and strong donor confidentiality practices.

Professional interaction with partner agencies and customers; strong data entry and PC/MS Office skills.

Ability to cover a minimum of 3 twelve-hour shifts or 5 eight-hour shifts per week.

Ability to tolerate strong smells and graphic/traumatic visuals.

Education

Associates degree in biology, chemistry, or a related scientific discipline or equivalent required.

Ability to perform essential functions as outlined in the position description.
