Overview Engineering Assistant I, II, or III – Design Division – Austin, TX. This position is in the Highway Safety and Operations Group in the Project Delivery Section and involves traffic engineering work, technical assistance, guidance documentation, training, and support related to highway and intersection capacity analysis, traffic simulation, safety modeling, and related project development processes from preliminary through final design. Works with Design Division groups such as Design Support and Landscape (Pedestrian and Mobility). Requires interaction with districts and other divisions, and compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines. This position may require contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level work under the supervision of the team lead.

Essential Notes All Engineering Assistants are required to participate in the Engineering Assistant Career Development program (EACDP) and sign a Program Agreement outlining responsibilities and service time commitment.

Responsibilities

Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through training and exams, and completes/maintains required documentation.

Applies engineering principles, methods, and techniques to transportation-related activities.

Collects engineering data at project sites.

Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program, including job rotation, training, and continuing education.

Performs engineering-related calculations, drafting, design, and field duties in transportation engineering.

Performs traffic analysis and data collection; uses automated design programs and CAD systems.

Reviews construction plans prepared by consultants (Engineering Assistant III).

Reviews engineering work for calculation errors and compliance with applicable laws, standards, and guidelines (Engineering Assistant III).

Minimum Qualifications (All Levels)

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or a related science field accepted by TX PELS. Acceptable substitutions include a Master’s or Doctoral degree in engineering from ABET-accredited programs in the same discipline.

Experience: Engineering Assistant I – None required; Engineering Assistant II – 1 year in engineering-related experience; Engineering Assistant III – 2 years in engineering-related experience. Experience may be full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. Safety Impact Certificate. Mandatory TX Engineer In Training Certificate (for some roles).

Engineering Assistant II

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science (TX PELS accepted).

Experience: 1 year in engineering-related experience (may be substituted as above).

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license; Mandatory: TX Engineer In Training Certificate; Safety Impact Certificate.

Engineering Assistant III

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science (TX PELS accepted).

Experience: 2 years in engineering-related experience (may be substituted as above; PE eligibility may substitute for two years of experience).

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license; Mandatory: TX Engineer In Training Certificate; Safety Impact Certificate.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

Indoor and outdoor work; ability to lift up to 10 lbs occasionally; sedentary work with occasional movement

Normal office environment with field components and site visits
