Position Summary The Portland State University Board of Trustees is a 15-member volunteer board appointed by the Governor of Oregon. The University Board Secretary serves as the primary liaison between the Board of Trustees and University administration, supporting the Board through strategic, high-level planning and management. The Secretary coordinates Board deliberations, meetings, and committee activities, maintains Board records, and provides counsel on Board issues to the President and senior administration. The Secretary also chairs the University Policy Committee and maintains the University Policy Library. Key Responsibilities Develop and implement long‑term strategic work plans for the Board and its committees. Ensure proper notice of meetings, maintain custody of Board records, and oversee the annual retreat, publications, and committee staffing. Act as the liaison between the Board and University administration on governance, procedural matters, and communications. Provide counsel to the President and senior leadership on Board issues, policy, and governance matters. Chair the University Policy Committee and maintain the University Policy Library. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Minimum four years of experience in an executive, board of directors, or equivalent setting. Strong commitment to racial justice and equity. Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with appropriate discretion. Highly effective verbal communication skills. Strong writing and editing skills. Demonstrated collaboration across varied constituencies in complex organizations. Highly organized and self‑motivated. Careful attention to processes, procedures, and requirements. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree or Juris Doctorate. Six or more years of experience in an executive, board of directors, or equivalent setting. Knowledge and experience in leadership‑level administrative operations in a higher education setting. Compensation and Benefits Salary $112,146 to $127,824 (Q1 level). Benefits include 95% premium paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; reduced tuition rates for employees, spouses or dependents at Oregon University System schools.
