Position Summary:
The Scientific Computing and Data group at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is at the forefront of accelerating scientific discovery through cutting-edge high-performance computing (HPC) and data services. We are looking for a Principal HPC Cybersecurity Architect who will play a pivotal role in shaping and managing our extensive 25,000+ core and 40+ petabyte high-performance computing systems along with clinical research databases.
This position is critical for evolving our ecosystem to be increasingly resilient and secure, supporting researchers in basic and translational biomedical research. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in cybersecurity and HPC with a strong collaborative approach and strategic planning acumen.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, implement, and manage robust cybersecurity operations within the HPC environment, ensuring compliance with industry standards such as NIST, ISO, GDPR, HIPAA, and CMMC.
- Establish best practices for data security, including encryption, audit logging, access control, and configuration management.
- Oversee comprehensive HPC system administration for optimal performance and resource efficiency across applications, databases, and hardware.
- Lead troubleshooting efforts on complex cybersecurity and systems issues while providing mentorship to team members.
- Ensure compliance with research goals and governmental funding agency requirements while promoting efficient resource utilization.
- Drive integration of HPC resources with laboratory equipment, adhering to all required regulations.
- Develop and update security policies and compliance documentation, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
- Collaborate with IT, compliance, and research teams to maintain operational alignment with Sinai Policy and data regulations.
- Implement hybrid and cloud-integrated HPC solutions utilizing both on-premises and public cloud resources.
- Participate in partnerships for deploying world-class research infrastructure regionally and nationally.
- Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies in HPC and cybersecurity, ensuring our infrastructure remains cutting-edge.
- Foster a collaborative environment within the team and across Mount Sinai.
- Provide after-hours support as needed and take on additional duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related scientific field; Master’s or PhD preferred.
- A minimum of 10 years of HPC system administration experience, notably with Enterprise Linux distributions like RedHat, CentOS, and in batch cluster environments.
- In-depth experience with high-throughput HPC technologies, including schedulers, networking, and configuration management systems.
- Proven knowledge of cybersecurity protocols, regulations, and best practices in sensitive environments such as healthcare or finance.
- Familiarity with compliance standards including HIPAA, NIST, and GDPR, with a demonstrated ability to maintain compliant HPC systems.
- Experience with secure computation methods and confidential computing.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills, with a strong customer-focused attitude.
- Scripting and programming capabilities are a plus.
Preferred Experience:
- Proficiency with cloud technologies and orchestration tools like Kubernetes and OpenShift.
- Hands-on experience with cloud services such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
- Familiarity with LSF job scheduler and GPFS Spectrum Scale.
- Experience in a healthcare research environment is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of software enabling privacy-preserving data linkage and experience with data transfer solutions.
- Awareness of various database technologies, including SQL and Oracle.
