Life Skill Aide
Primary Purpose:
To assist the teacher establish student self-esteem, socialization, and life skills to maintain a positive relationship between parents and school personnel.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
* High school diploma or GED
* Maintain Educational Aide Certification
* Maintain CPI training/certification
Special Knowledge/Skills:
* Ability to work with children with disabilities
* Desire and ability to work with and communicate effectively with staff, students, and parents
Experience:
* Experience working with students
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
* Assist students with physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene
* Help manage behavior of students, this includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed
* Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs
* Work with individual students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher
* Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom this includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty
* Keep teachers informed of special needs or problems of individual students
* Help the teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays
* Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom
* Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment
* Help teachers keep administrative records and prepare required reports
* Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers
* Assist students in regular classes, when assigned
* Oral/Nasal suction
* Tracheostomy suction using sterile procedure
* Nebulizer treatments
* Minor emergencies
* Catheterization
* Gastrostomy tube feeding
* Complies with directions and instructions from supervisor and performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as may be assigned
* Maintains positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and others in the conduct of district business; demonstrates teamwork in daily activities
* Is prompt, timely, and thorough in completing assignments and attending to details accurately and efficiently
* Is regular in attendance and complies with notification procedure for absences
* Provides complete and accurate information in the conduct of district business
* Participates in staff development training programs to improve job performance
* Participates in meetings and special events as assigned
* If applicable, input, verify, or update PEIMS information as assigned by the supervisor
* Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible
* Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations
* Adhere to the district's safety policies and procedures
* Maintain confidentiality in the conduct of district business
* Must be able to perform the essential functions of interacting with students and/or district employees in the specific work site assigned
* Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance
* Other duties as assigned
