Overview

Phlebotomists are responsible for obtaining blood specimens and collecting nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing. Phlebotomists have a strong eye for detail, excellent interpersonal skills, proficient verbal and written English skills, and the ability to prioritize a variety of tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing patients before drawing blood
  • Explaining blood draw procedures to patients and answering any questions about the process
  • Verifying patient information and labeling blood samples properly
  • Accurately updating patient information in the organization’s database
  • Helping nervous or frightened patients remain calm during blood draws
  • Processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing
  • Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing
  • Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the physician of the order, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory
  • Maintains compliance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures, and safety practices
  • Keeps work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies

Experience

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Required: None
  • Preferred Experience: 1 year experience in a healthcare clinical setting

Education

  • Required: High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Preferred: Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program

Certification

  • Required: BLS
  • Preferred: Phlebotomy Certification or Medical Assistant Certification
