Overview
Phlebotomists are responsible for obtaining blood specimens and collecting nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing. Phlebotomists have a strong eye for detail, excellent interpersonal skills, proficient verbal and written English skills, and the ability to prioritize a variety of tasks.
Responsibilities
- Preparing patients before drawing blood
- Explaining blood draw procedures to patients and answering any questions about the process
- Verifying patient information and labeling blood samples properly
- Accurately updating patient information in the organization’s database
- Helping nervous or frightened patients remain calm during blood draws
- Processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing
- Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing
- Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the physician of the order, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory
- Maintains compliance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures, and safety practices
- Keeps work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Required: None
- Preferred Experience: 1 year experience in a healthcare clinical setting
Education
- Required: High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Preferred: Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program
Certification
- Required: BLS
- Preferred: Phlebotomy Certification or Medical Assistant Certification
