Outpatient Phlebotomy - Offsite Labs - Arringdon role at Duke University Health System.

Hours: Monday - Friday, 9:15 a.m. - 5:45 p.m.

This position offers a $2,500 commitment bonus.

The multidisciplinary team serves the testing needs of Duke Health's diverse patient population by providing timely and accurate results, educating the next generation of laboratorians, scientists and physicians, and contributing to advancing diagnostics.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of routine and specialized procedures.
  • Prepare and initiate tests and procedures including cytogenetics, general laboratory tests, Point-of-Care Testing, urinalysis, phlebotomy, and specimen management.
  • Obtain total volume, perform aliquot and distribute urine specimens; determine urine volume and label aliquot containers.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and medical personnel; gather information for records, explain procedures, and mitigate concerns.
  • Maintain patient identification and laboratory records; register/accession patients/specimens and perform required order entry.
  • Perform quality control, safety, and infection control procedures to comply with internal and external regulations.
  • Receive and process specimens according to area procedures; transport specimens as needed and assist with courier activities.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and stock carts; handle basic office tasks and use hospital information systems.
  • Assist with maintenance of specimens/slides and routine laboratory maintenance.
  • Adhere to procedures for specimen handling and lab workflow as described by the department.

Qualifications

Education

High School diploma or GED. For phlebotomy assignment, completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation is recommended.

Experience

  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience acceptable.
  • Must have at least 2 years of experience as a Clinical Tech I or certification as a Phlebotomist, plus achieve the required competency level for the listed job responsibilities.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

  • Certification as a Phlebotomist by a nationally recognized board/agency may be required for Phlebotomy Services.
  • Certification of Basic Life Support preferred.
  • Pediatric Phlebotomy experience required.
  • National certifications from recognized bodies (e.g., NHA CLPlb, ASCP PBT, IAPS, NPA, ASPT, NPCE, NPS, AMT) or another approved by Clinical Labs leadership.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Basic phlebotomy and specimen processing techniques.
  • Knowledge of medical terms preferred.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Effective communication skills for interactions with patients and staff.
