Overview
JOB OBJECTIVES: Incumbent is responsible for performing routine maintenance and repair of the Portage County Solid Waste Management District (SWMD) buildings and grounds and assisting with recycling programs.
Responsibilities
- Maintain grounds through regular lawn maintenance which includes operating and maintaining mowers, cutting and trimming grass, pulling weeds, trimming hedges, sweeping and cleaning debris/litter from sidewalks and grounds, spreading mulch and other related grounds keeping tasks.
- Maintain grounds during winter weather by operating snowplows, salting sidewalks, steps, entrance ways and parking lots as needed.
- Pick up parts for repairs and deliver carts.
- Monitor propane tanks.
- Assist county residents with county recycling programs and operations; answer questions and provide information regarding recyclables.
- Assist county residents by unloading material dropped off by the public.
- Operate or use various forklifts, power tools, and hand tools as necessary to support county recycling efforts.
- Coordinate oil, anti-freeze and various items dropped off from the public.
- Shred documents.
- Perform general custodial and housekeeping tasks as directed; ensure walkways are free of debris.
- Have a general understanding of hazardous waste and where to properly place items.
- Coordinate monthly fire extinguisher inspections and exit light testing.
- Assist drivers on routes, when necessary.
- Operate a motor vehicle as needed to perform the essential functions.
- Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
- Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements
Equipment: Ability to use the following equipment: lawn mower, forklift, snowplow, weed trimmer, various hand and power tools; pick-up truck, car.

- Identify household hazardous waste and properly place material.
Job Standards
High School diploma or G.E.D. is required along with related experience and one-year construction laborer experience. Must have a valid Ohio driver’s license and maintain continuing eligibility under the existing County driving eligibility standards.
DIFFICULTY OF WORK
Work involves following standardized procedures to complete assigned duties.
RESPONSIBILITY
The supervisor provides direct supervision in following established practices and clear-cut policies. Errors are readily detected in the normal course of work by standard checking resulting in little or no difficulty in loss of time to correct.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Physical Requirements: Incumbent’s work is identified as heavy work, requiring the lifting of up to 75 to 100 pounds frequently and over 100 pounds occasionally. Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Physical Activity: Incumbent performs driving, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, driving, and repetitive motions.
Visual Activity: Incumbent performs work where seeing is at or within arm’s reach. Must have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and forklift.
Job Location: Incumbent works inside and outside with exposure to temperatures ranging from below 32 degrees to above 100 degrees for periods longer than one hour. Incumbent is occasionally exposed to slippery and uneven surfaces and hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles and equipment, electrical currents, high places, confined spaces, vibrations, loud noise, oils, and exposure to chemicals. Incumbents are occasionally exposed to atmospheric conditions including fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, or poor ventilation.
