Open to members of AFSCME 109 Public Works - Solid Waste Addendum Bargaining Unit Only. This role offers an opportunity to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair solid waste stationary equipment and facilities at Snohomish County Public Works.
Responsibilities
- Perform various skilled maintenance, preventive maintenance, and general repair tasks to maintain seven (7) solid waste facilities across Snohomish County.
- Maintain and repair solid waste gas, water, pneumatic, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
- Use steel welding and cutting techniques to fabricate and repair metal parts; perform general carpentry and plumbing tasks.
- Fabricate steel parts, wood, or concrete components; install or repair plumbing fixtures, water valves and lines/pipes.
- Operate heavy equipment (e.g., backhoes, loaders, forklifts) and perform routine grounds maintenance as needed.
- Work Monday – Thursday, 3:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. after two years, potential promotion to Solid Waste Maintenance Tech II following required training.
- Participate in the selection process including online application, supplemental questions, proficiency tests, interviews, and reference checks.
Qualifications
- One (1) year of experience operating a variety of equipment or hand/power tools in building maintenance or industrial mechanical work AND six (6) months experience or familiarity with steel welding and cutting; OR an equivalent combination of training and/or experience.
- Must pass job related proficiency tests for general mechanical, carpentry, plumbing and steel cutting and welding knowledge.
Special Requirements
- A valid Washington State Driver’s License is required for employment.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid First Aid/CPR Card within 6 months of employment.
- Employment is conditioned on satisfactory results of a post-offer drug screen, a medical examination, and a Physical Capacities Evaluation. This job is considered safety sensitive; a drug screen may be required prior to employment.
Knowledge, Abilities
Knowledge of: basic welding techniques; servicing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing hydraulic, mechanical and pneumatic systems; basic plumbing; carpentry and mechanical tools; safety rules and regulations; use of power tools.
- Ability to use hand and power tools skillfully and safely;
- Read, interpret and apply codes, blueprints, drawings, sketches, and work orders;
- Complete work efficiently and communicate progress with management and team members;
- Effective interpersonal skills and teamwork; self-motivated; good written and oral communication.
- Ability to communicate courteously and professionally with the general public, supervisors, and co-workers.
Working Conditions
Positions may require indoors and outdoors work in all weather at multiple county sites. Hazards include high voltage, dust, fumes, methane gas, grease, and refuse. May involve heavy manual labor and lifting over 50 pounds. May require evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and working at heights or in confined spaces.
