Position Summary This position is responsible for managing fleet-wide standards and processes for design, engineering, and technology for power plant capital projects and either new or re‑powered units within Energy Supply. Accountabilities include applying appropriate specifications, codes, and emerging technologies for use on capital projects throughout the Energy Supply fleet. The position is the primary contact with architect/engineers/vendors for design engineering and provides technical support for contracts and procurement. Provides design review support for capital projects which includes projects with $250 million annual budgets and individual projects that exceed $1 billion (renewable generation assets and other strategic gas generation assets). Provides supervision for engineers who report directly to this position and oversight of contract engineers.
Essential Responsibilities
Manage and lead a team of 10 to 16 engineering professionals as subject matter experts or project managers.
Develop and manage uniform standards and processes for plant design and engineering for all capital projects across the Energy Supply fleet.
Provide direction for conceptual and detailed design engineering on individual projects and ensure consultants, contractors, and suppliers meet accepted Energy Supply standards.
Lead project design and engineering activities associated with rehabilitation of existing units/plants and/or new generation facilities, ensuring market‑competitive projects, transmission outlet and pipeline capacity, reliability, and design optimization.
Research, review, recommend, and facilitate selection of technological alternatives/equipment for improved plant and environmental performance.
Support design and engineering review of capital projects in the Strategic Capital Investment Plan (5‑ and 10‑year plans).
Maintain awareness of leading‑edge technology and potential applications that enhance plant operational and maintenance objectives.
Participate in engineering and technology review committees and various utility industry efforts.
Ensure uniform equipment standards, specifications, and codes are established for all power plant and renewable energy capital projects across Energy Supply.
Provide oversight of and direction to both internal and AE firms providing design, engineering, construction, and technical services.
Apply knowledge of EPA, DOE, and FERC programs related to power plant emissions; familiarity with renewable and carbon‑free energy technology, open‑access/regional transmission requirements.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
10 years of experience in design engineering and/or power plant operation and maintenance; at least 5 years in major project design, engineering, and construction.
5 years of supervisory experience related to generating assets; hands‑on experience with project scope, schedules, estimates/budgets, economic analysis, contracts, and civil, mechanical, and electrical disciplines.
Registered Professional Engineer by examination required.
Demonstrated leadership capabilities and proven performance/results on major projects.
References may be required; selection criteria may include assessment.
Extended job assignments and extensive travel between regions required.
