Under direct supervision, assist physicians and nurses with examination, treatment, and special procedures. Apply splints to patients as authorized by Chief of Orthopedic Department, and perform related patient care duties in the Emergency Room. Follow established policies, routines, and procedures. Essential Responsibilities
Assist with therapeutic and diagnostic patient care functions that may require sterile technique, such as removal and application of dressings and splints, cleansing, irrigating wounds, and prepping. Explain standard self‑care procedures and orient patients to Medical Center policies and practices. Assist in emergency room diagnostic examinations by positioning and draping patients, and support minor surgical procedures. Assist with special procedures such as peritoneal lavage, lumbar punctures, thoracotomy, and thoracentesis. Organize treatment areas prior to surgical or examination procedures as needed. Answer incoming phone calls and take appropriate action. Perform CPR (closed‑heart massage). Perform 12‑lead EKGs and down load EKG data into the Muse system. Obtain complete vital signs and document patient status. Issue and adjust crutches and canes, instructing patients in proper walking technique as authorized by the Chief of Orthopedic Department. Apply basic splints for fractures/sprains under physician instruction. Coordinate instrument cleaning and processing with Central Processing per department process. Pick up and deliver items (forms, mail, specimens, etc.) between departments. Direct and transport patients to appropriate rooms or areas in ED or Medical Center. Maintain adequate stock of supplies and report needs to Charge Nurse or Clinical Supervisor. Perform other duties as assigned, including preparing gurney/beds, stocking patient items, supplying oxygen tanks, suction set‑ups, gloves, and EKG electrodes. Maintain a clean work area, including utility rooms, supply rooms, and ED ramps. Promote and improve customer service to internal and external customers. Basic Qualifications
Minimum six (6) months (1,000 hours) of recent experience in a health care/patient contact setting within the last two years. Current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived. Education
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required. Proof of successful completion of an anatomy course (accredited college, vocational, adult education) within the last three years; or six (6) months (1,000 hours) of recent Emergency Room Technician/EMT experience; or two (2) years recent experience in Kaiser Permanente Emergency Department required. License, Certification, Registration
Emergency Medical Technician Certificate (California) OR National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Paramedic Certificate OR National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians EMT Certificate. Basic Life Support. Additional Requirements
Successful completion of Kaiser Permanente Orthopedics demonstration/validation of ability to apply all types of splints within the probationary period. Employees will have a maximum of three opportunities to demonstrate/validate ability to apply all types of splints and other orthopedic devices. Preferred Qualifications
Minimum two (2) years Emergency Department or Emergency Medical Services experience. Notes
