Electrical Engineer

Leidos Gibbs & Cox, the largest independent naval architecture and marine engineering firm, is seeking a Marine Electrical Engineer Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support U.S. Coast Guard and other maritime vessel projects. This hybrid position requires 3 days per week onsite in Washington DC and offers remote work for the remaining 2 days.
Primary Responsibilities
Perform calculations, apply electrical engineering principles and techniques to address technical issues in the design and engineering of U.S. Coast Guard ships and other marine vessels.
Communicate technical principles directly to clients.
Perform quality‑assurance reviews of simple analyses, calculations, and drawings.
Design electric and electronic systems; study power generation and distribution, centralized machinery monitoring and control.
Provide leadership and coordinate review efforts for verification and validation work in the Electrical Engineering discipline.
Review design comments from junior engineers and advise decision‑makers on high‑impact, critical design review decisions.
Coordinate and lead review and adjudication of system design specifications, test requirements, departures from specification (DFS), requests for waiver (RFW), engineering changes (EC).
Lead effort to evaluate new or modified electronics on overall system performance.
Basic Qualifications
U.S. citizenship required.
Must be able to obtain a security clearance.
B.S. degree or higher in Technical, Engineering, or Marine field from an ABET‑accredited institution, or related field of work.
Minimum 15 years documented experience in electric propulsion, machinery control, power generation or distribution systems on government or commercial shipbuilding programs.
Extensive knowledge of U.S. Navy Power Distribution Architecture.
Extensive knowledge of U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, ABS and/or commercial ship design rules and regulations.
Preferred experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs.
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
Technical proficiency in electrical engineering to provide guidance and review of products.
Solid organizational and time‑management abilities.
Proven collaborator with management, peers, and staff.
Proven track record interacting with customers regarding technical and programmatic issues.
Flexible, resourceful, with a “figure‑it‑out‑and‑get‑it‑done” approach.
Proficiency in standard electrical system design and analysis.
Outstanding oral, written, and presentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Experience leading electrical engineering work efforts for government or commercial shipbuilding programs.
Experience with shipyard production systems, shipboard medium and low voltage power systems, 60 Hz and 400 Hz electrical plant, and power conversion.
Proficiency in standard software such as CAD, AutoCAD, and Rhino.
Knowledge of MIL standards and specifications.
U.S. Coast Guard experience.
Compensation Pay range: $126,100.00 – $227,950.00
Location Washington, DC (3 days onsite, 2 days remote).
