Overview Description

The Nurse Education Manager is an advanced role involving the management, assessment, planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of clinical and educational activities, including orientation, staff development and competency assessments. Responsibilities

PATIENT EXPERIENCE Leads nursing practice using the Professional Practice Model of Relationship Centered Care and the Care Delivery Model of Modified Primary Nursing to promote the patient experience. Demonstrates proficiency in Hourly Care Checks and models expected behaviors. Ensures integration of Care Checks into clinical activities to enhance Relationship Centered Care. Validates staff competency in Care Checks and provides feedback with increasing specificity as needed. Communicates quantitative and qualitative information regarding the patient experience to staff and the Interdisciplinary Patient Care Team. Collaborates with the Nurse Manager/Assistant Nurse Manager/physician dyad and escalates concerns as appropriate. Follows up on patient concerns in a timely manner and provides service recovery as needed. Demonstrates caring, respect, compassion, empathy and active listening through dialogue, body language and actions. CLINICAL/TECHNICAL SERVICE Oversees development and implementation of the nursing education budget, including capital equipment allocation, with recommendations aligned to Mount Sinai Health System financial goals. Maintains, reviews and evaluates educational record keeping and reporting systems, updating as necessary. Supports meetings related to area of assignment and participates in research activities related to education, healthcare management, and clinical practice. Provides care based on age-appropriate criteria (physical, psychosocial, educational, safety) for patients served in the assigned area. Age Specific Competencies Identifies physical, behavioral and emotional characteristics typical for the age groups served (Neonate/Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric). Modifies approaches based on age-specific needs and responses to treatment. ADMINISTRATION/OPERATIONS Implements Relationship Centered Care as the Professional Practice Model and Modified Primary Nursing as the Care Delivery Model, with support of Hourly Care Checks. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in management of information. Observes mandatory educational requirements and aligns departmental objectives with corporate policies, strategies and goals. Participates in management of external consulting services and serves as a department representative on committees as designated. Participates in policy development based on evidence, best practices, and expert opinion. Acts as a resource for staff regarding Department of Nursing policies and procedures. Participates in recruitment, retention and evaluation of staff, including performance improvement planning and probation decisions as applicable. Supports mission, vision, goals and objectives of the department across clinical units. Encourages quality and safety participation and mentors staff in related initiatives. Facilitates organizational change and supports patient throughput, acting as a resource for the unit. EDUCATION Develops and supports staff development activities; identifies learning strengths and needs; utilizes learning resources and designs programs to facilitate organizational development. Evaluates educational effectiveness at learner, departmental and institutional levels; coordinates and implements activities to achieve educational objectives. Designs instructional materials and selects appropriate strategies; coordinates maintenance of educational materials and orientation plans for assigned areas. Acts as trainer, facilitator, consultant, and supervisor during orientation for new hires/transfers; oversees centralized and unit-based orientation and ensures timely evaluations. Participates in Nurse Residency and relevant New Graduate Fellow programs as applicable; introduces new hires to the Daily Management Process. Incorporates ethical principles into decision-making with the clinical nursing staff and healthcare team. Serves as a professional role model and preceptor for new leadership staff and students. QUALITY AND SAFETY Leads a safe, patient-centered care environment and fosters a culture that supports reporting of errors and near-misses. Leads interdisciplinary quality improvement teams using high-reliability principles and communicates quality/safety metrics to staff and leadership. Participates in daily management processes related to new processes and escalation of quality/safety concerns; supports regulatory compliance and corrective actions. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Acts as a clinical leader who supports nursing practice and an environment of excellence; communicates caring, respect and empathy. Promotes ethical decision-making, lifelong learning, and evidence-based practice; serves as a role model and preceptor. Contributes to the profession through leadership and participation in professional organizations. Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Nursing required Master's degree in Nursing or related healthcare field with nursing education/leadership experience; Master in Nursing Education preferred Candidates enrolled in graduate programs considered with close graduation dates Professional board certification in clinical specialty or staff development recommended Demonstrated competence in education and management/administration with clinical specialty Licensed as a registered nurse in New York State All relevant American Heart Association Cardiac Life Support certifications required by assignment Oncology Chemotherapy Administration Certification required if assigned to oncology Employer Description The Mount Sinai Health System is an equal opportunity employer, compliant with federal civil rights laws. Compensation The Mount Sinai Health System provides salary ranges that comply with salary transparency laws. The listed salary range for the role is $115,494 - $173,241 annually. Actual salary depends on factors including experience, education, and operational need.
