Entry-Level Construction Materials Professional
– Wilmington, North Carolina. Requisition Number: 2025-1060-11. S&ME is looking for a motivated and passionate Entry-Level Construction Materials Professional to join our Construction Services team in Wilmington, NC. Join us at S&ME! As an entry-level Construction Materials Professional, you are vital in guaranteeing the integrity and safety of construction endeavors by evaluating and confirming the characteristics and quality of materials used.
Your Day-to-Day
Testing construction materials:
Perform tests and oversee special inspections of materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and others to ensure they meet project specifications and industry standards.
Analyzing construction plans and specifications:
Verify that they align with project goals before conducting field observations.
Recording and managing field activities:
Document detailed observations and test results during project execution, using Metafield or other management systems daily for efficient data handling and coordination.
Preparing reports and proposals:
Help draft reports and proposals for smaller projects, ensuring thorough and accurate assessments and documentation.
Communicating daily:
Interact with management, contractors, and clients to maintain project transparency and provide regular updates on progress.
Experience shifting work hours based on project needs and weather conditions, including early mornings, some Saturdays, and overtime (paid at time and a half). Travel expenses (per-diem/lodging) are covered when assisting other offices.
What You Bring
Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering or a similar engineering field
0-2 years of experience in construction materials testing/inspecting soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt
Willingness to obtain industry certification within 6 months of employment
Basic math and communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
Understanding of a fluctuating schedule and occasional travel
Working Conditions and Physical Demands You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of company-provided personal protective equipment, such as:
Working outdoors with hands-on effort in varying weather conditions
Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for long periods, potentially up to 12 hours a day
Routinely lifting and carrying 40–50 lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
Maneuvering field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground around active construction sites
